Overview

Hospital medicine is the fastest-growing medical specialty, demanding a broad and highly specialized skill set. Hospitalists are increasingly responsible for managing patients with higher acuity and greater clinical complexity. They serve not only as primary attending physicians on general medicine services but also on subspecialty inpatient services, reflecting the expanding scope and critical role of hospital medicine in today’s healthcare system.

Through the Hospital Medicine Fellowship, you will:

  • Develop advanced clinical expertise in managing complex adult inpatients across diverse care settings, including general medical and surgical units, the progressive care unit, and the intensive care unit.
  • Refine consultation skills by addressing common inpatient medical issues in specialized environments such as the behavioral health unit, and by providing medical consultations for patients in cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, and the departments of gynecology and obstetrics.
  • Gain proficiency in Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) for both diagnostic and procedural applications, including central line placement, paracentesis, and thoracentesis.
  • Provide care for patients in innovative care models, such as Mayo Clinic’s Advanced Care at Home program, which delivers hospital-level care in the home setting.

Program highlights include:

    • A flexible, individualized curriculum tailored to each fellow’s professional interests and career goals.
    • Opportunities to participate in research or quality improvement projects, guided by experienced and widely published faculty mentors.
    • A comprehensive didactic program featuring structured lectures, monthly journal clubs, and quarterly morbidity and mortality review sessions.
    • Exceptional faculty mentorship, with dedicated educators committed to fostering clinical excellence, leadership development, and lifelong learning.
