Fellow profile
Courtney McEwen Cho, M.D., Class of 2028
Hometown: Jupiter, Florida
Medical school: University of South Florida College of Medicine
Why did you choose Mayo Clinic? I chose Mayo Clinic for its commitment to patient-centered, values-based care and its exceptionally collaborative culture. Here, I see those values reflected in patient care every day. The opportunity to care for patients with complex conditions while learning from leaders in the field made Mayo an ideal place to continue my training.
What stood out to you about this program? The flexibility of the fellowship stood out to me. The program can be tailored to your interests, career goals, and future plans, particularly if you are considering a career in academic medicine. The embedded master's degree through the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences provides dedicated training in research methods and an opportunity to develop the skills needed for an academic career. Fellows can also pursue areas of individual interest, including emerging topics such as artificial intelligence and machine learning.
How has your experience been in this program? My experience has been excellent. Even after completing my OB/GYN residency at Mayo Clinic, the fellowship has offered a distinct next stage of training. Protected research time and master's coursework have allowed me to develop academically, while increasing clinical autonomy has helped me continue advancing my surgical and obstetric management skills with experienced consultants readily available for support. It has been a valuable transition into caring for high-risk and medically complex obstetric patients at a referral center. I also really enjoy working closely with and teaching residents.
What do you like about living in Rochester? Rochester makes day-to-day life easy and gives you more time to enjoy life outside of work. Commutes are short, parking is straightforward, and there are plenty of opportunities to be outdoors. The winters are as advertised, but the long summer days make it worth it! Rochester is also close to the Twin Cities so you're a one-hour drive away from big-city amenities like MSP airport, dining, arts, and entertainment while still benefiting from Rochester's convenience.
What are your hobbies? Outside of work, I enjoy Lagree, jogging, language learning, traveling, podcasts and audiobooks, cooking and baking, and spending time with my husband and two dogs, Wilson and Charlie — no relation to the Mayo brothers.

Josh Brunton, D.O., Class of 2024

What do you like about the fellowship at Mayo Clinic? Wonderful people within our department, and the dedicated year of research gives you time to develop a quality project, and there are many departmental resources to assist you. Working closely with the residents, medical students, and other fellows provides a rich learning/teaching environment.
Why Mayo Clinic: The reputation of Mayo Clinic is well known, and we are fortunate to have many leaders in the obstetric and maternal fetal medicine community as part of our department which enriches the learning environment here tremendously. Also, as a dual physician family, I was fortunate to follow my wife here for the next step in our medical training.
Current position: MFM Fellowship, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, Richmond, VA
