Ross Rowsey, Ph.D.
Program Director
Assistant Professor of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology
Consultant in Laboratory Medicine & Pathology
The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, is one of the world's largest and most sophisticated clinical laboratory and pathology departments. The department performs more than 20 million laboratory tests annually in support of the Mayo Clinic practice and more than 4,000 Mayo Clinic Laboratories clients around the world.
Backed by the knowledge and expertise of more than 160 consultants and 3,000 employees in a wide range of professional roles, the department supports patient care across the continuum of care ranging from the patient's bedside to esoteric laboratory and pathology services. The department works collaboratively with colleagues in Arizona, Florida, and throughout the Mayo Clinic Health System.
The Division of Laboratory Genetics was established in 1992 with Cytogenetics, Molecular Genetics, and Fertility Testing laboratories, adding the Biochemical Genetics Laboratory in 1996 and the Clinical Genome Sequencing Laboratory in 2014.
Since its formation, the Division of Laboratory Genetics has actively contributed to the study of genetic disease and the advancement of genetic testing and related technology. This effort is ultimately aimed at enhancing clinical patient care. Within each laboratory, board-certified directors and genetic counselors work closely with laboratory supervisors and technologists to ensure that accurate, reliable results are available in a timely manner.
In addition to caring for patients in their clinical practices, Mayo Clinic's faculty is committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Many faculty members have published and lectured extensively and are highly regarded in their fields.
You have direct access to Mayo Clinic's laboratory genetics specialists throughout the Laboratory Genetics and Genomics Fellowship.
Fellows are assigned dedicated faculty advisers who can provide comprehensive educational advice and personal support. You meet with your advisers periodically throughout the fellowship to review progress and career goals, and ensure that your educational needs are being met. Advisers also serve as a contact point for introducing you and your family to Rochester, Minnesota, and the Mayo Clinic system.
Many prominent professors visit Mayo Clinic each year. They present their work during lectures and participate in hospital rounds and have informal discussions with trainees. You are encouraged to take full advantage of these educational opportunities.
Welcome to the Laboratory Genetics and Genomics Fellowship at Mayo Clinic!
We are excited to introduce you to our training program that prepares future leaders in the field of Laboratory Genetics and Genomics. Our laboratory covers the breadth of Laboratory Genetics and Genomics, crossing all disciplines including hereditary genetics, genetics of hematologic malignancies, and solid tumor oncology genetics, offering fellows an expansive practice environment. Additionally, we have a large, diverse faculty who represent experts across all these subspecialities, providing a collaborative environment where fellows benefit from mentorship that spans the full scope of Laboratory Genetics and Genomics.
Another defining strength of our program is our high-volume casework, ensuring exposure in core cases while also offering extensive experience with rare and complex cases. This combination of standard and rare allows for our fellows to set a foundation in laboratory genetics that sets them up for a successful career. We are committed to fostering a supportive and intellectually rigorous learning environment. Fellows graduate from our program not only with the technical skills and clinical insight necessary for board certification, but with the confidence and experience to lead in both academic and clinical laboratory settings.
We invite you to learn more about our program and encourage you to reach out with any questions. We look forward to the possibility of welcoming you to our fellowship and supporting your growth as a future leader in Laboratory Genetics and Genomics!
