Curriculum

Dr. Leon meets with a patient in a clinic office at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.

The Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Fellowship trains you in all aspects of minimally invasive surgery, including hysteroscopy, conventional laparoscopy, and robotically-assisted laparoscopic procedures for benign and malignant conditions as well as pelvic reconstruction.

Traditional "open" surgery and vaginal surgery are also important components of fellowship training. The curriculum includes training in endoscopic urology and general surgery as it relates to gynecology.

Training includes:

Rotation schedule

Clinical rotations are in the outpatient and inpatient settings, including operating room time. There are off-service rotations for the second-year fellow, with colorectal surgery and radiology as time permits, as well as a one-month rotation with Dr. Samuel Brown (of Brown Fertility) for experience with reproductive, endocrine, and infertility services.

Call frequency

On average, fellows take 11-12 days of at-home on-call hours per month. These are typically scheduled Monday through Thursday for two weeks and additionally one weekend per month.

Didactic training

As a fellow, you participate in a variety of on-site and three-campus lectures and conferences, including weekly "chalk talk" sessions to review articles and videos, and weekly tri-site didactics teaching sessions. There are monthly research conferences to review progress. You may elect to attend a weekly gynecologic oncology tumor board.

Simulation

There is a weekly simulation practice session and fellows are encouraged to use the simulation center which is always open and available for use. In addition, faculty-led cadaveric sessions are held four to five times yearly where fellows can perform new procedures or hone their skills on embalmed or fresh cadaveric torsos.

Teaching opportunities

You have the opportunity to teach residents, Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine students, and visiting students from other medical schools at patients' bedsides and through formal didactic lectures.

You also present at continuity CME courses sponsored by Mayo Clinic School of Medicine and the Mayo Clinic J. Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver Simulation Center in Florida.

Conferences

You are required to present at the AAGL Global Congress on Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at least once during the fellowship. Yearly attendance at the AAGL Global Congress is required and reimbursed. Additional presentation opportunities are encouraged and reimbursed if trip requirements are met.

Evaluation

To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop the appropriate technical skills to meet program expectations, your performance is monitored carefully during the Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Fellowship. AAGL case logs are also monitored to ensure that requirements for AAGL certification are met.

You are formally evaluated by supervising faculty members on a regular basis and meet with the program director to review these evaluations. In addition, you regularly evaluate the faculty to confirm that your educational needs are being met.
