Meet The Faculty
Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Florida, offers state-of-the-art training with a skilled team of specialists experienced in treating gynecologic conditions. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient gynecology services. Surgical options for gynecologic conditions range from minimally invasive procedures to more complex open surgery.
The Department of Medical and Surgical Gynecology at Mayo Clinic's Florida campus is divided into three areas of special expertise:
- Gynecologic oncology
- Female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery
- Minimally invasive gynecological surgery and urogynecology
The gynecology team in Florida performs over 1000 surgeries each year. The electronic medical record system and digital imaging display application at Mayo Clinic streamline the work process, enabling physicians to spend more time with patients. Our physician experts use a multidisciplinary integrated team approach to best treat challenging conditions.
Faculty
Anita Chen, M.D.Program Director Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Chen is a fellowship-trained urogynecologist. She received her medical degree at James H. Quillen College of Medicine, East Tennessee State University. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Florida Health Science Center. After residency, she completed her fellowship in urogynecology and pelvic reconstructive surgery in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at George Washington University. She is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery and has received the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology focused-practice designation in Minimally Invasive Gynecology Surgery (MIGS). |

Aakriti Carrubba, M.D.Associate Program Director Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Carrubba is a fellowship-trained Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgeon with an American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology focused-practice designation in Minimally Invasive Gynecology Surgery (MIGS). She is committed to providing minimally invasive options for patients to shorten recovery time and return to normal activity. Tri Dinh, M.D.Department Chair Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Dinh is a gynecologic oncologist. He earned his medical degree and interned at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He completed his residency in general obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, followed by a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. |

Sherif El-Nashar, M.B., B.Ch., M.D.Associate Professor of Obstetrics and GynecologyDr. El-Nashar is board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in General Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. |

Matthew Robertson, III, M.D.Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Robertson received his medical degree at the University of Virginia. He completed his internship, residency, and fellowship with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. |

Christopher Destephano, M.D., M.P.H.Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Destephano is a gynecologist who specializes in minimally invasive surgery. He earned his medical degree at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, followed by a Master of Public Health from Emory University Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta, Georgia. He then completed his residency in gynecology and obstetrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, followed by a fellowship in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science in Rochester, Minnesota. |

Olivia Cardenas-Trowers, M.D.Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Cardenas-Trowers is a fellowship-trained urogynecologist that is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery. |
Supplemental faculty
Second year trainees will have the opportunity to visit Dr. Samuel Brown and staff at his local practice, Brown Fertility, for a four-week external surgery rotation.
Samuel Brown, M.D. Dr. Brown studied at the renowned Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine and offers extensive knowledge of fertility treatment, hospital-based surgeries, and tubal reversals backed by 20-plus years of clinical experience. As the first surgeon in Florida to introduce minimally invasive robotic gynecological surgery for infertility, he is widely recognized as a leader in the field. He is dual board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology, as well as reproductive endocrinology and infertility. |
