Clinical training

During the 12-month Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship, you participate in all aspects of patient care. Rotations with surgeons performing bariatric, gastrointestinal, endocrine, and broad-based general surgery are provided.

Call frequency

Mayo Clinic follows the recommendations of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Moonlighting

Moonlighting is not permitted during this fellowship.

Didactic training

As part of this program, you participate in all conferences within the Department of Surgery including:

• Surgical Grand Rounds
• Morbidity and mortality conference
• Medical-Surgical Conference
• Monthly meeting of the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery

Research training

You are expected to participate in clinical research studies, either prospective or retrospective in nature. In addition, you may pursue collaboration with basic sciences at other medical facilities in the area.

Publications and presentations

It is anticipated that each of the prospective studies developed will generate results and information suitable for publication in a major surgery journal. Two additional critical manuscripts are expected. These may include a major subject review, case report (limited to one only) or a retrospective review.

Teaching opportunities

Opportunities are available for teaching rotating surgery fellows and residents, and fellows during conferences. In addition, you have the opportunity to train residents in both animate and inanimate settings.

Evaluation

To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop appropriate technical skills to meet program expectations, individual performance is monitored carefully during the training program. You are evaluated formally by supervising faculty members on a regular basis and meet with the program director to review these evaluations. In addition, you evaluate the faculty to ensure that your educational needs are being met.
