The most important indicator of the success of a training program is found in the outcomes of the graduates upon completion of their training. Some of our graduates share why they chose Mayo Clinic for their training and what it was like living in Jacksonville, Florida.
It may sound cliché, but I am amazed by the practical implementation of Mayo Clinic's core values, which are deeply embedded in our program. Learning the best evidence-based patient care at one of the leading faculties in the field of nephrology is truly an honor. Working in a referral and tertiary care center gives opportunity to witness a wide range of renal pathology. The working environment is second to none and is based upon mutual respect, approachability and access to excellent resources.
Abdul Basit, M.D.
2024 Graduate; Medical school: La Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina (ELAM) Residency: Coney Island Hospital
Mayo Clinic is an ideal place for my training because we share a philosophy for patient care. The patient's needs must be prioritized in mind, body, and spirit. Furthermore, it is essential to encourage patients to participate in the decision-making process of their healthcare. I feel that this approach to patient care is, indeed, practiced here at Mayo Clinic. I am encouraged as a provider and trainee to educate my patients and listen thoroughly to their needs in order to give the best care.
Leanna Ritchie, M.D. 2024 Graduate; Medical school: University of Medicine and Health Sciences - St. Kitts & Nevis Residency: DMC Huron Valley-Sinai
Thinking about which fellowship program to attend, the most important factors for me were the depth of training, the environment of training, and the distance from my family. Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, was the winner in all three of these areas and has been a wonderful place to train. The attending physicians, nursing staff, and techs are excellent and are all wonderful to work with, to the point where training here feels like being with a second family.
Hiroshi Hikida, D.O. 2023 graduate; Medical School: Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine; Residency: Merit Health Wesley
The fact that it lives by its guiding principle "the needs of the patient come first." This is made manifest by the actual patient population themselves who are deeply appreciative of the holistic treatment they receive. Not only that but I was also attracted to Mayo because the people here are leaders in their respective fields on a global scale. It's an honor and a dream for me to learn and work with them so closely.
Ayesha Khan, M.B.B.S. 2023 graduate; Medical school: Ziauddin Medical College; Residency: St. Vincent Charity Medical Center
These were the nicest people in medicine. I had access to the most interesting cases. The resources and support allowed me to put my patients first. I'm so happy I chose this Mayo Clinic family!
Hamdi Rahman, M.D. 2022 graduate; Medical school: Saint Lucia - Spartan Health Sciences University; Residency: Medstar Health Internal Medicine, Baltimore
Moving from a big city, I was hesitant about Jacksonville. After living here during residency and fellowship, I now call it my second home. The city offers multi-national restaurants, amazing theaters, pro-sports teams, outdoor activities, and more that residents enjoy daily. There's a perfect mix of small-town and big-city (without bad traffic) with a variety of people and neighborhoods for every lifestyle. Jacksonville has something for everyone!
Ibrahim Khambati, M.D. 2022 graduate; Medical school: American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine, St. Maarten (Dutch); Residency: Orange Park Medical Center
Mayo's three shields each symbolize its core principles: patient care, research, and education. These are not just a part of Mayo’s legacy but represent the reality of how they deliver healthcare. Mayo continues to live by its guiding principle, 'The needs of the patient come first.' I learned from world leaders who treated me as an equal and truly cared about my own personal success.
Lyle Baker, M.D. 2021 graduate; Medical school: University of Oklahoma College of Medicine; Residency: Tulsa School of Community Medicine, Internal Medicine
On the weekends, I went to the beach to relax since it was so close and easily accessible. There were plenty of fun little shops along the beach and very good restaurants all in the same vicinity. St. Augustine is about a 30-minute drive for a weekend trip to learn history and visit monuments. The downtown area offers tours and lots of fun activities for all ages.
