Curriculum

Clinical training

In order to acclimate to the culture and workflow of the practice, the first three to six months will be spent as a PGY-1 equivalent assigned to general neurosurgery chief service. After that time, you are placed in direct mentor relationships with teaching staff for the remainder of your first year.

In the second year, you continue to rotate amongst core services with an increasing focus on your primary field of interest. During these rotations, you will run the service as first assistant to the staff neurosurgeon, equivalent to our neurosurgery junior level.

Rotation descriptions

Once you are acclimated to the culture and routine of Mayo Clinic through our general neurosurgical services, your experience is typically guided by your interests while still focusing on a general neurosurgical exposure. From here, more subspecialty training occurs in two-month blocks. Second-year rotations are typically tailored to your interests.
