Meet The Faculty

The faculty at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, and at Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital focuses on fostering functional recovery for inpatients and outpatients through an integrated, multidisciplinary team of rehabilitation professionals at each site.

Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, opened its doors in 1986 with 35 physician consultants and 145 staff/allied health personnel. It's now the practice site for more than 400 physician consultants and 7800 staff and 120,000 patients are seen annually in 40 specialty areas.

The Department of PM&R in Jacksonville, Florida, started in 1990 and now includes seven physiatrists (physicians specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation), as well as more than 100 physical therapists, occupational therapists, and rehabilitation techs. Inpatient rehabilitation and consultation services are offered by the department at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, but the majority of the department’s work is done in the outpatient setting at the San Pablo Road campus and the Gate Parkway Sports Medicine Center.

In addition to caring for patients in their clinical practices, Mayo Clinic's faculty members are committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Many of our faculty have published and lectured extensively and are highly regarded in their fields.

About Brooks Rehabilitation

For more than 50 years, the nonprofit Brooks Rehabilitation, headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida, has been a recognized leader in physical rehabilitation. Named by Newsweek as the number one physical rehabilitation center in Florida, Brooks Rehabilitation operates two inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, including one of the nation’s largest with 170 beds, one of the region’s largest home healthcare agencies, and more than 40 outpatient therapy clinics; the Brooks Rehabilitation Medical Group; two skilled nursing facilities; assisted living; memory care; and a center for inpatient rehabilitation in partnership with Halifax Health (Daytona Beach).

Brooks Rehabilitation operates the Clinical Research Center, which specializes in advanced research to further the science of rehabilitation and offers the latest in robotics, virtual reality, and assistive technology to improve patient outcomes. For example, Brooks Rehabilitation is one of two locations in the U.S., and the only location on the East Coast, that has Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL). HAL is a robotic exoskeleton that is instrumental in helping patients with a variety of lower-limb movement or balance issues progress toward their desired recovery. Brooks Rehabilitation also provides many low or no-cost community programs and services, such as adaptive sports, a brain injury clubhouse, an aphasia center, a motion analysis center, and wellness programming to improve the quality of life for people living with physical disabilities. James Atchison, D.O.Here at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, we offer an outstanding, innovative, and comprehensive training experience in physical medicine and rehabilitation for you. The collaboration between Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, for outpatient physical medicine and rehabilitation training and Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital for PM&R inpatient training offers a remarkable opportunity to learn at two well-established institutions at the top of their fields in the state of Florida and regionally.

You'll become proficient in diagnosing and managing the common and complex outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation problems of patients, with an emphasis on learning to meet the needs of your patients, and to allow them to return to the highest level of function and quality of life possible.

We expect you to competently and collaboratively offer excellent clinical care to every patient and embrace Mayo Clinic's three-shield model which not only includes clinical care, but an emphasis on education and research. You should be ready to learn daily and participate in the education of medical students and other residents on topics related to musculoskeletal and neurologic rehabilitation. In addition, you will be expected to design and conduct scholarly research utilizing the extensive resources of Mayo Clinic and Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital.

Advisers and mentors

You are assigned a faculty adviser who can provide educational advice and personal support. Your adviser also serves as a contact point, introducing you to the Mayo Clinic system and Jacksonville, Florida. You will also have a research and career mentor throughout residency which you may choose or have assigned to you based on your areas of interest.

Visiting professors

Many prominent professors visit Mayo Clinic each year. They present their work during lectures and participate in hospital rounds. Your attendance at these educational opportunities is supported and encouraged.
