Ten nondesignated positions at the PGY-1 level are available on a competitive basis each year in the Preliminary Surgery Residency Program at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota.

How to apply

The academic year begins in July. Orientation begins mid-June (exact dates to vary year to year).

The application and all supporting documentation must be submitted by Oct. 1 of the year preceding the program start date.

You must apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). International medical graduates should contact the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) for information on how to apply using ERAS.

  1. Visit the ERAS website. All applications to Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education programs must include these application materials.
  2. Appointments are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). You must register through the NRMP website in addition to applying through ERAS.
  3. Applicants considered for an appointment will be invited to a virtual panel interview with selected Mayo Clinic faculty, associate program directors, and residents. The interview dates for the General Surgery Residency preliminary program are Jan. 9-10, 2024. You will spend time with the program director, faculty, and residents. You will also get to tour the facilities, observe our chief resident conference, and meet with faculty interviewers to get a more personal view of this incredible place.
