The fellowship begins with an orientation program and clinical rotations in Rochester, during the summer of the first year. In the fall of the first year, you will pursue academic training at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health in Minneapolis, leading to a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree. Possible specialization/concentration areas include: biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health, public health administration, community health education, maternal and child health, public health nutrition, and public health practice. Numerous classes are offered online to minimize commuting (about 75 miles each way).

During the M.P.H. program, you will receive full stipend and benefits from Mayo Clinic. In addition, tuition at the University of Minnesota will be paid.

Public Health Rotation

Preventive medicine fellows are required to complete a two-month public health rotation. This is accomplished in cooperation with St. Paul/ Ramsey County Department of Public Health.

Patient Care

You will gain extensive patient care experience in Mayo Clinic's Division of Preventive Medicine and other specialty areas. The division's staff members practice preventive medicine, occupational medicine, and internal medicine, offering:

Preventive and occupational care services to more than 26,000 Mayo Clinic employees, handling pre-placement evaluation, return-to-work assessment, workplace risk surveillance and workers' compensation case management
Preventive and diagnostic services for the executives of approximately 800 corporations
Specialized aviation medical services to major airlines
Medical consultation services to area businesses
Specialized consulting services in preventive medicine, aviation medicine, and occupational/environmental medicine to other divisions within Mayo Clinic

Medical consultation to the Olmsted County Department of Public Health in the area of Adult Detention Center.

Electives

Ample time is provided to pursue elective rotations, which include health-care administration, immunization clinic, refugee clinic, health-care policy and research center, pediatric preventive medicine, and the Clinical Research Unit (CRU). Electives can be tailored to your individual career goals in the preventive medicine and public health fields.

Conferences

Fellows and staff attend a division conference and a Journal Club every month at noon. In addition, core curriculum conferences are held weekly. As a fellow, you are also invited to attend numerous multidisciplinary seminars and conferences.

Research Training

Your opportunities for research experience at Mayo Clinic are outstanding. Numerous world-class researchers are available for mentoring fellows depending on their interests and career goals. Collaboration with faculty within the Division of Preventive, Occupational, and Aerospace Medicine; faculty in other specialty areas at the Mayo Clinic or at the University of Minnesota has been historically very successful and is encouraged. You are expected to conduct at a minimum one original study and pursue it through publication and presentation in a national meeting.

Evaluation

To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and practical skills, program performance is monitored throughout the fellowship and formally evaluated quarterly.
