Meet Our Fellows

Our fellows come from medical schools around the U.S. and outside the country. See what the current fellows have to say about our program.

How is the program unique?

Few programs can offer the balanced mix of neoplastic, transplant, and non-neoplastic cases seen here. If you want the zebra cases like rare thymic tumors, odd interstitial lung diseases, etc., you will find them here. We have radiology conferences, resident teaching sessions, and more, so every aspect of becoming a thoracic pathologist is covered. Don’t worry if it sounds like a lot; there are progressive responsibilities. We are not expected to do it all right away!

What is Rochester like?

Rochester offers the peace and quiet of a small town, but the amenities of a larger city. To my surprise, there are good Asian grocery stores and a selection of Chinese books at the library. I am enjoying my time here.

Why Mayo Clinic for fellowship training?

Mayo has long history of expertise in pulmonary pathology. The program is well-balanced with dedicated time for pulmonary cytology, pediatric pathology, molecular pathology, radiology, bronchoscopy, and research. There is also ample exposure to transplant cases, including gross examination of explanted lungs and post-transplant biopsies.

How is the program unique?

The program includes a month in the frozen section lab, a great refresher on all types of pathology. There are also three months of elective time, allowing trainees to build expertise in a second subspecialty area during a single fellowship year.
