Curriculum

Mayo Clinic's Radiology Informatics and Artificial Intelligence Fellowship is designed to provide an opportunity for radiology clinical and research training at the fellowship level. You progress from participation in existing research programs within the department to formulation of an original program of investigation. The specific timetable for this progression depends on your prior experience.

Clinical training

During this fellowship, you receive advanced training in all aspects of radiology technology in both outpatient and hospital radiology settings. This can occasionally be combined with traditional imaging-focused fellowships, if both fellowship programs are amenable.

There are no direct patient care responsibilities or medical procedural requirements during the fellowship. However, clinical radiology can be a component of the fellowship if specific educational objectives (such as workflow analysis or technology assessment) can be met or supplemented by real-world clinical practice activities.

Off-site rotations

Rotations to facilities outside of Rochester, Minnesota, are not required, but can be arranged if necessary to meet specific educational objectives or participate in informatics initiatives being actively pursued at other Mayo sites.

Call frequency

Call may occur as part of the teleradiology rotation, or in conjunction with other clinical fellowships. Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science follows the recommendations of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Research training

Extensive research opportunities and facilities are available through Mayo Clinic's Department of Radiology. In addition to the basic curriculum, you are expected to choose a research project under the guidance of the program mentors and department staff, which will lead to conference presentations or peer-reviewed manuscript publications.

Completion of at least one project with presentation of results at a national meeting and publication in a journal is a requirement of the fellowship.

Didactic training

You are expected to participate in departmental didactic activities including radiology informatics lectures, which are part of the core curriculum for the Mayo Clinic residency. Additional didactic bioinformatics, statistics, computer programming, biomedical engineering or others, depending on your specific interests, needs and projects.

Conferences

Clinical conferences, seminars, small discussion groups, journal clubs and one-on-one instruction are all an integral part of this fellowship. You are expected to:

  • Attend departmental meetings and conferences
  • Develop and make presentations at departmental conferences
  • Attend conferences at research facilities
  • Prepare papers for presentation at research conferences

Teaching opportunities

You have the opportunity to teach students from Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and visiting students from other medical schools through daily clinical work and formal didactic lectures.

Evaluation

To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop the appropriate technical skills to meet program expectations, your performance is monitored carefully during the Radiology Informatics Fellowship. You are formally evaluated by your supervising faculty members on a regular basis and meet with the program director to review these evaluations. In addition, you regularly evaluate the faculty to confirm that your educational needs are being met.
