Department and Faculty
Mayo Clinic in Rochester is a leading center for kidney and pancreas transplantation, performing over 200 transplants annually. Active clinical programs include:
- Living donor and deceased donor kidney transplantation
- Pancreas transplantation
- Simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplantation
- Pancreas after kidney transplantation
Emphasis is placed on overcoming barriers to transplantation while optimizing patient and allograft survival using innovative protocols, including:
- Positive cross match and ABO incompatible living donor kidney transplantation
- Combined liver and kidney transplantation for genetically based diseases, such as familial amyloidosis and primary hyperoxaluria
Mayo Clinic's Kidney-Pancreas Transplant Program involves a multidisciplinary team consisting of transplant nephrologists, transplant surgeons, clinical nurse coordinators, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, study coordinators, social workers and other allied health professionals, in addition to general nephrology and renal transplant fellows. The entire transplant team will participate in your fellowship training.
Inpatient and outpatient areas dedicated to transplant patient care are also staffed by specialized nursing and allied health professionals. In addition to kidney and pancreas transplantation, the Transplant Center integrates programs in liver, heart and lung, and blood and marrow transplantation to specifically facilitate collaboration in clinical, research and educational pursuits among transplant specialists at Mayo Clinic.
Long-term kidney and pancreas transplant outpatient follow-up is provided by transplant nephrologists, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners in the nephrology outpatient clinic as well as in specialized outpatient clinics for transplant-related infectious diseases, endocrinology, dermatology and cardiology. All tissue typing, cross matching and alloantibody assays and therapeutic apheresis occur on the Mayo Clinic campus.

In addition to caring for patients in their clinical practices, Mayo Clinic's faculty members are committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Many of our faculty have published and lectured extensively and are highly regarded in their field. Fellows work directly with the kidney and pancreas transplant faculty at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
Advisers and mentors
The fellowship program director and a faculty adviser will provide educational advice and personal support. Your adviser also will serve as a contact point to introduce you and your family to Rochester and the Mayo Clinic system.
Visiting professors
Many prominent professors visit Mayo Clinic each year. They present their work during noon and morning lectures and participate in hospital rounds. You will be encouraged to take full advantage of these opportunities.
