Overview

Sleep medicine is a growing and exciting field of multidisciplinary medical practice. Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, offers the one-year Sleep Medicine Fellowship designed for physicians who are interested in developing diagnostic and clinical expertise in the field of sleep medicine, which focuses on the diagnosis and management of:

  • Sleep disordered breathing
  • Narcolepsy and hypersomnias
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Parasomnias
  • Insomnia

This training program provides you the opportunity to evaluate and manage a broad variety of sleep disorders in both adult and pediatric patients. As a fellow, you learn the clinical essentials of sleep medicine and develop skills for using and interpreting diagnostic tools such as:

  • Polysomnography
  • Home sleep tests
  • Oximetry
  • Multiple sleep latency tests
  • Maintenance of wakefulness tests
  • Actigraphy

Upon completion of the fellowship, you should have acquired the skills and knowledge necessary to direct a full-service sleep disorders center and laboratory, and to provide expert evaluation and care for patients with both common and rare sleep disorders.

As a Sleep Medicine fellow, you will enjoy a rich opportunity to encounter and provide care for a high volume of common and uncommon sleep medicine problems. The Center for Sleep Medicine at Mayo Clinic receives over 6,870 annual adult patient referrals and over 1,000 child or adolescent patient referrals annually from within the integrated Mayo Clinic practice, which includes the surrounding communities, as well as regional, national, and international patient referrals.

The Sleep Medicine Fellowship capitalizes on the vibrant and very busy adult and pediatric sleep medicine practice based in the Center for Sleep Medicine on the 17th floor of the Gonda Building at Mayo Clinic's campus. The center features:

  • An integrated outpatient clinic and laboratory facility offering 24 state-of-the-art video-EEG capable laboratory polysomnography beds
  • A comprehensive, interdisciplinary, team-based approach to patient care
  • The mentorship of 25 highly engaged faculty from the fields of pulmonary and critical care medicine, neurology, pediatrics, psychiatry, and family medicine.

A busy hospital consultative sleep medicine service is an additional unique training opportunity. Outstanding clinical research opportunities abound in every subspecialty of sleep medicine, and fellows are required to perform a project of their choosing and highly encouraged to present their work at the Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, for which attendance is fully supported.
