Mayo Clinic's liver transplant program in Rochester, Minnesota, has developed as a natural extension of the world-renowned and award-winning Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. As one of the largest referral centers for liver disease in the world, Mayo Clinic provides an ideal environment to care for patients.

The liver transplant program at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester is known nationally and internationally as a center of excellence. Since the first liver transplant was performed at Mayo Clinic in 1985, more than 300 liver transplants are performed each year in children and adults. Our multidisciplinary team approach to health care, experienced staff and quality facilities have allowed us to achieve short- and long-term patient survival rates above national averages. See liver transplant volumes and success measures.

The establishment of the Mayo Clinic William J. von Liebig Center for Transplantation and Clinical Regeneration has been a milestone in transplantation at Mayo Clinic. The consolidation of all transplant programs (liver, kidney, pancreas, islet cell, heart, lung, bone marrow) into the Transplant Center has permitted unprecedented multidisciplinary cooperation and integrated care, further enabling us to improve the health and lives of our patients.

Our program is committed to training the academic hepatology workforce of the future with a focus on clinical excellence, multidisciplinary care models, cutting-edge therapies, and next-generation cures.

Our liver transplant program is known nationally and internationally as a center of excellence and innovation. Our group has pioneered advances in the field including liver transplantation for hilar cholangiocarcinoma, combined liver transplant/bariatric surgery, as well a very large living donor liver transplant practice.

At Mayo Clinic, you will learn and practice in a state-of-the-art clinical environment where the needs of the patient come first. You will work daily with world-renowned transplant hepatologists and transplant surgeons whose interests and expertise embrace all areas modern transplant hepatology. Our division is committed to driving innovative solutions to our patients by continuously translating basic and clinical research discoveries into improvement in patient care. As an advanced fellow, you will be an integral member of the transplant team. Your time at Mayo Clinic will include meaningful research and teaching experiences along with the high quality clinical education.

Advisers and mentors

You will be assigned a mentorship committee consisting of a clinical faculty adviser and a research mentor who can collectively provide comprehensive educational advice, career development, mentorship, and personal support.
