Meet The Faculty

Our staff dermatologists evaluate and manage patients requiring medical and surgical tertiary care. They offer expertise in dermatopathology and Mohs micrographic surgery as well as in evaluating many dermatologic conditions, including:

  • Cutaneous lymphomas
  • Melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancers
  • Atopic dermatitis
  • Contact dermatitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Other inflammatory and autoimmune dermatoses

Program director, Leila Tolaymat, M.D. and Associate Program Director, Katherine Bodiford, M.D.Dermatology residency is challenging, but it can be rewarding and enjoyable in a collegial and supportive environment. The critical component to our success has been the dedication of our residents to learning and their encouragement and caring for one another.

Both residents and faculty agree that the strength of our program lies in the unique design of our resident clinic in which every resident clinic is a continuity clinic. The ability for a resident to follow patients longitudinally for three years develops expertise in clinical diagnosis and treatment, procedural expertise, and patient advocacy. 

Diversity of educational hands-on experiences from general dermatology to procedural dermatology to cosmetic dermatology prepares our residents for a range of career paths, including private practice, fellowship, and academic dermatology.

Our faculty is highly committed to the professional development of our residents and the program facilitates extensive personal contact with each faculty member through our staffing model. In addition, our residents have access to tremendous clinical, educational, and research resources throughout their training. The program encourages successful mentor-mentee relationships to maximize the opportunity for personal achievement.

Faculty

In addition to caring for patients in their clinical practices, Mayo Clinic faculty members are committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Many of our faculty have published and lectured extensively and are well-regarded in their fields. You have direct access to these individuals throughout the Dermatology Residency.

Katherine Bodiford, M.D.

Katherine Bodiford, M.D.

Assistant Professor of Dermatology

Undergraduate: New Mexico State University
Medical school: University of New Mexico
Residency: Dermatology, Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, FL


After residency, Dr. Bodiford worked in private dermatology practices in Florida and Alabama before returning to Mayo Clinic in 2019.


She has published multiple papers in peer-reviewed dermatology journals, authored a chapter for a dermatology textbook, and presented at multiple local and national dermatology meetings. She is board-certified in dermatology and a member of the American Academy of Dermatology.


Dr. Bodiford specializes in general medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology, and enjoys seeing patients of all ages. Her medical interests include general medical and procedural dermatology, mucous membrane disease, immunobullous disease, and connective tissue disease.


Dr. Bodiford lives in Jacksonville Beach with her husband, son, and their family dog.

Alison Bruce, M.B., Ch.B.

After residency, Dr. Bruce practiced as a consultant in the Department of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, for 15 years, where she served as the Dermatology Residency Program Director for six years.


In 2015, she transitioned to the Mayo Clinic campus in Jacksonville, Florida, where she now serves as the Chair of Dermatology and Co-Director of the Cosmetic Center.


Dr. Bruce is a Professor of Dermatology, well-published with over 50 peer-reviewed articles, and several book chapters. She is widely recognized as an authority on diseases of the mucous membranes, and an expert in the field of oral and genital dermatology. Additionally, she has a particular interest in women's health and skin disease, oral and mucous membrane disease, and regenerative medicine, as well as aesthetic skin care and rejuvenation.

Catherine Degesys, M.D.

After completing her fellowship, Dr. Degesys worked in private practice in Atlanta before joining faculty at Mayo Clinic.


Dr. Degesys has published multiple papers in peer-reviewed dermatology journals, authored an anatomy chapter in a dermatology textbook, and presented at multiple conferences. Dr. Degesys is board-certified in Dermatology and Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery (2021) and a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American College of Mohs Surgery. She recently was awarded "Mayo Top Performer: Patient Satisfaction" (2022). 


Dr. Degesys enjoys spending time with her husband, two children, and their dog.

Matthew Hall, M.D.

Dr. Hall earned his undergraduate degree at Princeton University and his doctor of medicine at Vanderbilt University. He completed his dermatology residency at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.


Dr. Hall specializes in allergic contact dermatitis and patch testing. He directs the patch testing clinic, which tests 250 patients yearly. He enjoys spending time with family and working out on his Peloton bike.

I'm originally from Brazil and I practiced there as a dermatologist for seven years before moving to Jacksonville, Florida, eight years ago. I'm a mom of three kids (Felipe 13, Rafael 11, Luisa 9) and I love spending time with them and my husband, especially at the beach and the pool! I love running, trying out new restaurants, cooking Brazilian food, traveling, and watching movies with my family!

After completing her fellowship, Dr. Barbosa served as the Director of Mohs Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology, as well as the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the University of New Mexico, Department of Dermatology, from 2018 to 2021. In December 2021, she returned to Mayo Clinic as a Senior Associate Consultant.


Dr. Barbosa is board-certified in Dermatology and Mohs surgery by the American Board of Dermatology. Her medical interests include Mohs surgery, excisional skin surgery, rhinophyma surgery, melanoma, and melanocytic skin lesion.

Dr. Sluzevich is a medical dermatologist/dermatopathologist at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. He has been on staff at Mayo Clinic for 11 years and is involved in resident education and clinical research.


Dr. Sluzevich's clinical interests include autoimmune connective disease and cutaneous lymphoma.
