  • Preparing and educating patients, reviewing medical histories, and ensuring the proper documentation of patient information related to the imaging procedure.

  • Applying knowledge of MRI safety practices, including patient safety, equipment safety, and magnetic field safety protocols.
  • Ensuring that appropriate contrast agents, if required, are administered and documenting activities related to their use, in line with state and institutional policies.

  • Completing an MRI certificate program, which includes both didactic courses specific to MRI education and clinical experience. Certificate programs are available through colleges, universities, and teaching hospitals.

Certification for an MRI technologist

Many employers require candidates to have completed professional MRI certification and basic life support (BLS) training, or to earn certification soon after hire. Several organizations offer certification for MRI technologists, including the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Certified MRI technologists will practice under the title Registered Technologist in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (R.T. (MR)) if certified by the ARRT.
