Positions
The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery, including Heart and Lung Transplant, admits 1-2 trainees each year on a competitive basis.
Admission requirements
Prerequisites
To be eligible for the program, you must have the following requirements completed prior to starting the fellowship:
- Graduated from an accredited nurse practitioner or physician assistant program. Students completing their final year from an accredited program are encouraged to apply.
- A current nurse practitioner or physician assistant license in the state of Minnesota.
- ACLS and BLS certification
- National board certification
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration is required to participate in the fellowship. This can be done after acceptance, and registration expenses are paid for by Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences.
Candidates are selected based on grades and work/clinical experience, as well as volunteer experience, leadership qualities, and representation of personal qualities and skills.

Non-U.S. citizen applicants
Admission to Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences is open to U.S. workers in the four categories below. Therefore, visa sponsorship is not available.

Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based test (TOEFL iBT). Scores from the speaking portion of the exam are given particular consideration in admission decisions. Learn more about the exam and register online at the Educational Testing Service.
The Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences code for the TOEFL iBT is 5784.
Educational transcripts from schools outside the U.S. must be translated (if they are not already in English) and evaluated for U.S. equivalence by an accredited credential evaluation service company prior to submission. Please refer to the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services for a list of qualified companies. The applicant pays for the examination and credential-evaluation services.

- Complete each section of the application and submit
- After submission, view the required Supplemental Items and Documents
- Upload each required item in the Supplemental Items section
- Complete the Recommendation Request section
Additional required items
- Two recommendations from a professor, faculty, preceptor, or supervisor are required and must be completed in the Recommendation Request section. Each recommender will receive an email with a link to complete a recommendation form.
- CV/Resume
- Personal statement (maximum 500 words). Describe your personal and professional experiences and how they relate to your interest in the program, your success in completing the program, and a career in cardiothoracic surgery.
- Unofficial college transcripts may be uploaded in the Supplemental Items area for application purposes.

- If admitted, official transcripts must be provided to the program directly from the institution(s) prior to the start of the program.
Interview process
The selection committee carefully reviews each application. Individuals considered for acceptance are initially interviewed virtually. Based on virtual interview a candidate may be invited to Mayo Clinic’s Rochester campus for in-person interview.
Acceptance
Appointment letters are mailed no later than May 31. Your reply is expected within 7 days.
