As a resident in the PGY-2 Pharmacy Residency in Ambulatory Care at Mayo Clinic, you will develop skills in meeting with patients to review their medications for indication, safety, effectiveness, interactions, and adherence. You will apply these skills across a variety of practices, tailored to meet your interests.
Our goal is to help you be a knowledgeable clinical pharmacist who provides the best individualized care for your patients. You will have a diverse experience that will prepare you for a variety of professional pathways, including clinical practice, management, research, teaching, or a combination of these.

Across midwest sites, Mayo Clinic Department of Pharmacy employs more than 1,300 individuals, including more than 600 pharmacists, to provide comprehensive care for inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory care patients. As a single, full-integrated department, residents have direct access to a near unlimited pool of subject matter experts in virtually every area of interest.
Dedicated preceptors
Preceptors for the PGY-2 ambulatory care residency provide direct patient care in various outpatient settings and are actively involved in resident teaching and other scholarly activities. The preceptors come from diverse backgrounds and share numerous years of experience, clinical knowledge, and research interests. Residents have direct access to these and many more preceptors and mentors to optimize the learning experience.
More than 100 pharmacists at Mayo Clinic are certified by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties in various practice areas. All residency program preceptors meet the qualifications outlined by the ASHP.

Inpatient
The inpatient practice at Mayo Clinic is one of the most robust in the nation, offering pharmacy residents with seemingly unlimited specialty and sub-specialty learning experiences in nearly every disease state. The inpatient pharmacy uses a combination of centralized operational services, decentral clinical, and specialty roles to offer comprehensive pharmacy care 24 hours per day.
Outpatient
Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN has a variety of outpatient pharmacy facilities, including seven licensed walk-up pharmacies, a specialty pharmacy, and mail order, which collectively dispense more than 4,900 prescriptions per day. As part of a fully integrated department, the outpatient practice works seamlessly with inpatient and ambulatory care areas to provide exceptional patient care. The outpatient practice is afforded broad collaborative practice agreements to optimize patient medication regimens.
Ambulatory care
Pharmacists at Mayo Clinic provide direct patient care in a host of onsite and virtual clinic settings, including targeted and comprehensive medication reviews, transitions of care, complex care, and chronic disease management. Broad collaborative practice agreements are in place that allows pharmacists and pharmacy residents to practice at the top of their license. A plethora of ambulatory care learning experiences are available based on your area(s) of interest.
