Overview
After completing the 12-month PGY-2 Pharmacy Residency in Emergency Medicine at Mayo Clinic Health System — Eau Claire, Wisconsin, you will be a proficient, independent practitioner capable of providing advanced clinical pharmaceutical care in emergency medicine and toxicology.
The purpose of the PGY-2 Pharmacy Residency in Emergency Medicine at Mayo Clinic Health System — Eau Claire, is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY-1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY-2 residencies provide you with opportunities to function independently as a practitioner by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge, and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings.
Residents who successfully complete this PGY-2 pharmacy residency will be prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification in emergency medicine.

Program highlights
The program provides the high-quality didactic and clinical experiences needed to create a well-rounded, competent clinical pharmacist. PGY-2 emergency medicine pharmacy residents:
- Develop expertise, knowledge, and skills in an emergency department environment
- Contribute to an interdisciplinary healthcare team by participating in all resuscitation team activations, including trauma, stroke, shock, overdose, acute coronary syndrome, and cardiopulmonary resuscitations in adult and pediatric patient populations
- Recommend patient-specific therapeutic interventions to treat emergent and urgent encounters
- Efficiently and effectively provide accurate, reliable, and evidence-based drug information to the interdisciplinary emergency department team, patients, and caregivers
- Experience unique multidisciplinary educational opportunities including providing presentations and engaging in simulations
- Enhance skills in conducting clinical research and quality improvement
- Strengthen communication skills by presenting formal and informal lectures, writing a professional manuscript, and leading interdisciplinary discussions
- Network with fellow pharmacy residents and practicing clinicians through professional membership and conferences

Program history
The PGY-2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency at Mayo Clinic Health System — Eau Claire is a newly-developed program accepting our first resident during the 2025-2026 residency year. Our program has been approved for pre-candidate status through ASHP and anticipates being accredited upon graduation of our first resident.
