Application Process
Positions
Two candidates are accepted on a competitive basis each year for the Acute Care Physical Therapy Residency at Mayo Clinic's campus in Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona.
Admission requirements
Prerequisites
To be eligible for the Acute Care Physical Therapy Residency you must have:
- Current licensure as a physical therapist by the Arizona State Board of Physical Therapy by July start date
- Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card
- For information, see the Arizona State Board of Physical Therapy website
- Initiation of application for the fingerprint card is required for residency applications to be considered
- Compliance with Mayo Clinic's general employment requirements, which include a criminal background check and pre-employment drug testing
- Preferred membership in the American Physical Therapy Association
All applicants are evaluated by the Acute Care Physical Therapy Residency acceptance committee based on these criteria:
- Academic education and degrees obtained
- Clinical education and mentoring experiences
- Clinical experience specific to acute care physical therapy
- Research experience
- Community service
- Letters of reference
Other factors that weigh into the committee's decision:
- Completion of an internship under the direct clinical supervision of a clinical specialist in the acute care setting
- Demonstration of superior verbal and written communication skills
- Experience in data collection, analysis, and publication
- Strong fundamentals in the principles of clinical reasoning and the application of age-appropriate examination and treatment procedures
Admission policies
Non-U.S. citizen applicants
Admission to Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences is open to U.S. workers in the four categories below. Therefore, visa sponsorship is not available.
- U.S. citizens
- U.S. nationals
- Lawful permanent residents
- Asylees and refugees
Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based test (TOEFL iBT). Scores from the speaking portion of the exam are given particular consideration in admission decisions. Learn more about the exam and register online at the Educational Testing Service.
The Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences code for the TOEFL iBT is 5784.
Educational transcripts from schools outside the U.S. must be translated (if they are not already in English) and evaluated for U.S. equivalence by an accredited credential evaluation service company prior to submission. Please refer to the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services for a list of qualified companies. The applicant pays for the examination and credential-evaluation services.

Interview process
The selection committee carefully reviews each application. Individuals considered for an appointment may be invited to Mayo Clinic in Arizona for an in-person interview or interviewed by Zoom.
Acceptance
Appointment letters are mailed in early March. Your reply is expected within 10 business days.
