ASU Premedical Students of Barrett, The Honors College, participate in hands-on labs with physicians at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona.

The Barrett Premedical Scholars Program is a one-year program for students of Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University (ASU). This program nurtures humanitarian instincts and introduces premedical students to the breadth and diversity of medical practice. Selected students are given the unique opportunity to shadow Mayo Clinic physicians, attend lectures, and participate in hands-on labs and community programs. 

Unique program highlights:

  • Shadow Mayo Clinic physicians. Students spend at least 20 and up to 40 hours shadowing physicians or other health care professionals at Mayo Clinic. Students are encouraged to follow individuals from a diverse selection of medical and surgical specialties. 
  • Experience hands-on labs. Labs are designed to give students an introduction to the mechanical skills performed by physicians. Past examples have included suturing, casting, and simulated disasters in the Mayo Clinic Multidisciplinary Simulation Center. 
  • Attend lectures. Lectures will take place approximately every other month online or at the ASU Tempe campus during the school year and will be given by various medical professionals. 
  • Participate in community programs. These programs have been carefully selected to complement the diversity of the educational experiences and promote humanitarian interests. 
  • Receive assistance on medical school application. Medical school application assistance will be provided to participants in the Barrett Premedical Scholars Program to help students prepare a strong personal statement. 

Program eligibility

The Barrett Premedical Scholars Program is open to sophomore, junior, and senior students of Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University. Fifty students will be selected per academic year. 

How to apply

Applications for the Barrett Premedical Scholars Program open on April 16, 2024. Your application and all supporting documentation must be received by May 30, 2024.

Application instructions

Complete the following steps to apply:

  1. Create an account to begin the online Application for Admission. Select the following when creating an account:
    • School of study - Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science Experience
    • Area of Interest - Barrett Honors College Premedical Scholars Program (ASU)
  2. Select "Create a New Application."
  3. Select "Start a Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science Experience Application."
  4. Complete each section of the application and submit.
  5. After submission:
    • Select the "View" button next to your application. 
    • Select the "Supplemental Items & Documents" tab.
      • Upload your personal statement (500 words). Please remember to format, spell check, and number your pages.
      • Upload your college unofficial transcripts

Acceptance

After applications are reviewed, notices of acceptance will be sent out by July 24, 2024. The 1-year program begins September 2024 and continues until August 2025.

Program history

In 2008, Mayo Clinic initiated the Barrett Premedical Scholars Program to foster the career development of premedical students within Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University. The program originally started with twenty students who participated in the program until they graduated. In 2011, the program increased the number of students to a maximum of fifty but limited the duration to one year to allow more students to participate. 

This program has been formally endorsed by Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine.
