Didactic Training
Didactic training is an integral part of Mayo Clinic's Anesthesiology Residency. Residents participate in:
- Clinical case conferences
- Core curriculum lectures
- Introductory lecture series
- Education Days
- Journal clubs
- Morbidity and mortality conferences
- Oral board practice exams
- Problem based learning discussions
- Simulation
- Subspecialty mini-lectures
- Written board reviews
The introductory lecture series occurs daily throughout the first clinical anesthesia month of residency. The lecture series provides new CA-1 residents with foundational knowledge in anesthesiology. Following the first month, the core curriculum lectures occur on a weekly basis and consist of American Board of Anesthesiology Basic and Advanced topics, problem-based learning discussions, and simulations. All residents are always relieved from clinical duty in order to participate in weekly didactics.
Throughout each academic year, our residents participate in a number of Education Days specific to the various subspecialties within anesthesiology (i.e., neuro, OB, cardiac). During these days, all residents are relieved from clinical duty for the entire day to participate in subspecialty-specific interactive lectures, problem-based learning discussions, oral board review sessions, simulations, and hands-on skills sessions.
Our residents and faculty engage in journal club on a monthly basis. During journal club, our emphasis is on building knowledge of research methods and statistical analyses in order to critically appraise various literature.
Mayo Clinic provides unmatched clinical experiences to produce well-rounded, knowledgeable, and capable anesthesiologists. I enjoy that our program size allows for close relationships between all the residents, and between residents and faculty. At Mayo, resident education is a priority and our case variety and exposure are second to none.
