Meet The Faculty

Mayo Clinic anesthesiologists examining a patient

The Department of Anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic in Arizona is a highly integrated, collaborative group of anesthesiologists. The department is comprised of 50 staff anesthesiologists, six pain medicine consultants, two internists, 14 anesthesia residents, two physician assistants, two pain medicine fellows, six nurse practitioners, and more than 100 nurse anesthetists who are committed to providing the best possible care to perioperative patients. Members of the department also conduct clinical research and teach postgraduate and continuing education programs. We’re number one in the nation by volume for kidney transplants (Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients, 2022-2023).

In 2023, Mayo Clinic in Arizona completed a record 525 kidney transplants and 284 liver transplants, in addition to 31 heart transplants, 25 pancreas transplants and 196 bone marrow transplants. Mayo Clinic Arizona has also taken up the mantle of laryngeal transplant, establishing the Larynx and Trachea Transplantation Program, a first-of-its-kind program approved by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).

From the program director

Monica Harbell, M.D.Since its opening in 1987, Mayo Clinic in Arizona has grown into one of the most prominent medical centers in the country. We have been named the No. 1 hospital in Arizona by the U.S. News & World Report for the past 10 years. We're a busy transplant center and this past year we were top in the nation for liver and kidney transplantation case volumes.

Our program offers both a categorical and advanced program. In our PGY-1-4 categorical program, you spend the first year completing a transitional year internship at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. Our program is unique in that you’ll have exposure to both academic anesthesiology and private practice anesthesiology during training.

Most required clinical anesthesia rotations are completed at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, where we care for medically complex patients undergoing cutting-edge procedures. Residents rotate for obstetrics, pediatric, and trauma anesthesia at Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and Banner Thunderbird Medical Center with our faculty from private practice. Spending six to nine months working in private practice is a truly unique and rewarding experience as it opens our residents’ eyes to the private practice perspective.

In addition to clinical excellence, our residents have great opportunities for research and involvement with quality improvement projects. Many of our residents have presented research at national meetings and published articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Lastly, you can enjoy living in Phoenix and Scottsdale, one of the most beautiful and dynamic urban areas in the country.

Our program is one of the best and most balanced anesthesiology training programs in the country. Our residents graduate 100% ready for independent practice, and they carry with them for the rest of their careers the Mayo Clinic’s core values of patient-centered care and a commitment to education and research.
