The Department of Anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Florida, is a highly integrated, collaborative group of anesthesiologists. The department includes more than 50 anesthesiologists, 18 residents, three regional anesthesia fellows, and approximately 110 nurse anesthetists.
All are committed to providing the best possible care to perioperative patients. Members of the department also conduct clinical research and teach postgraduate and continuing education programs.
From the program director
Welcome to the Anesthesiology Residency Program at Mayo Clinic in Florida! As Program Director, it is my privilege and honor to lead a program focused on cultivating future leaders in Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.
The Anesthesiology Residency at Mayo Clinic in Florida offers residents world-class clinical training with an emphasis on early exposure to high-acuity perioperative care. Due to our small program size, residents can easily customize their clinical experience as they progress to develop early expertise in a subspecialty in preparation for fellowship training or clinical practice. We offer a dynamic curriculum spanning diverse subspecialties — including cardiac, thoracic, pediatric, obstetric, trauma, and neuroanesthesiology — enhanced by extensive training in pain medicine, critical care, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), and perioperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). Our campus is experiencing exhilarating clinical growth, allowing our Department to further develop as leaders in caring for patients undergoing solid organ transplant (thoracic and abdominal) as well as complex cardiothoracic, neurosurgical, and abdominal procedures.
In addition to our fantastic clinical training, our program offers stellar non-clinical training with the goal of developing graduates as both clinical leaders and leaders in research, education, and innovation. In order for our residents to develop non-clinical expertise, our program offers residents in good academic standing a weekly Academic day on Mondays. During these “Academic Mondays”, residents attend departmental Grand Rounds prior to our weekly didactic sessions—including monthly simulation sessions with faculty, expert-led content lectures, and board-preparation sessions. Our didactic sessions typically occupy a half-day, allowing residents a half-day during the week to work on research projects, study for board exams, and maintain their well-being. Available on most clinical rotations, “Academic Mondays” serve as an amazing opportunity for our residents to develop their non-clinical interests and expertise.
Our faculty is comprised of enthusiastic educators with wide-ranging clinical and non-clinical expertise, allowing residents a myriad of mentorship opportunities across diverse areas of interest. Moreover, our faculty seek to foster an atmosphere where inquiry and innovation are encouraged—where residents are challenged, supported, and prepared for long-term success. While our residents might say that I have trouble hiding my own passion for Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesia and Critical Care, I sincerely value our program’s customizability that allows residents to individualize their clinical and non-clinical education. I believe Mayo Clinic’s Anesthesiology Residency in Florida offers one of the most unique and rewarding residency experiences available today. I invite you to explore our curriculum and community, meet our residents and educators, and see for yourself how transformative training here can be.
