Curriculum

The Clinician Educator Pathway offers a structured, longitudinal curriculum designed to prepare Mayo Clinic residents and fellows for careers as clinician educators. The program introduces core principles of medical education and academic teaching, supporting trainees who aspire to become effective clinical teachers, curriculum designers, and educational leaders.

Sessions are held monthly on the first Tuesday of each month from August through June, spanning eleven consecutive months. Each session is a half day (11 a.m.-4 p.m. CT) and is primarily conducted virtually via Microsoft Teams, with in-person attendance required at each site for the opening and closing sessions. Participants are excused from clinical duties during scheduled sessions. Cohorts include trainees from multiple specialties across all Mayo Clinic sites, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and peer learning.

The curriculum uses a multifaceted educational approach, including:

  • Small-group learning and peer coaching
  • Interactive, faculty-led presentations
  • Mentorship from experienced clinician educators
  • Review and discussion of assigned readings and scholarly articles
  • Collaborative group work focused on educational innovation

Each session consists of four hours of presentations and one hour dedicated to article review or large-group discussion, emphasizing reflection and practical application. Course materials, learning modules, and session recordings are housed in Brightspace to support asynchronous learning and review.

Content focuses on the foundational skills required of clinician educators, including effective clinical teaching, presentation skills, curriculum design, and methods for evaluating learners and educational programs. While specific topics may evolve over time to reflect innovations in medical education, core domains remain consistent to ensure a strong educational foundation.

Throughout the year, participants work in small groups to develop a capstone project, allowing trainees to apply learned principles to a real-world educational challenge and to engage in educational scholarship. Upon successful completion of the program, participants receive a certificate of completion, recognizing their commitment to professional development and achievement in the Clinician Educator Pathway.
