Curriculum

Surgeons and fellows in Complex Benign Gynecology operate at Mayo Clinic

The Complex Benign Gynecology Fellowship trains you in all aspects of complex benign gynecology, including hysteroscopy, conventional laparoscopy, and robotically-assisted laparoscopic procedures for benign and malignant conditions as well as pelvic reconstruction.

Traditional "open" surgery and vaginal surgery are also important components of fellowship training. The curriculum includes training in endoscopic urology and general surgery as it relates to gynecology.

Training includes:

Rotation schedule

Clinical rotations are in the outpatient and inpatient settings, including operating room time. There are off-service rotations for the second-year fellow, including a one-month reproductive, endocrine, and infertility (REI) elective. Optional rotations, including radiology and colorectal surgery, are available.

Call frequency

On average, fellows will take at-home on-call Monday through Thursday, once every three weeks and one weekend per month.

Didactic training

As a fellow, you participate in a variety of on-site and three-campus lectures and conferences, including weekly "chalk talk" sessions to review articles and videos, and weekly tri-site didactics teaching sessions. Additionally, you will participate in monthly Endometriosis Multi-Disciplinary Case Conferences as well as quarterly Pelvic Pain Education meetings.

Simulation

Fellows are encouraged to use the simulation center, which is always open and available. Faculty-led cadaveric sessions are held four times per year where fellows can perform new procedures or hone their skills on embalmed cadaveric torsos.

Teaching opportunities

You have the opportunity to teach residents, Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine students, and visiting students from other medical schools. Several of our fellows have received Golden Stethoscope teaching awards from the graduating medical school class.

Conferences

You are required to present at the AAGL Global Congress on Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at least once during the fellowship. Yearly attendance at the AAGL Global Congress is required and reimbursed. Additional presentation opportunities are encouraged and reimbursed if trip requirements are met.

Evaluation

To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop the appropriate technical skills to meet program expectations, your performance is monitored carefully during the Complex Benign Gynecology Fellowship. AAGL case logs are also monitored to ensure that requirements for AAGL certification are met.

You are formally evaluated by supervising faculty members on a regular basis and meet with the program director to review these evaluations. In addition, you regularly evaluate the faculty to confirm that your educational needs are being met.
