Fellow Life

Trainees are supported by their colleagues, mentors, and peers while completing their dermatopathology fellowship at Mayo Clinic. This environment encourages them to explore their unique interests and make the most of their training experience and time in Rochester. Mayo Clinic provides resources to help trainees prioritize their emotional and physical well-being, and enhance their professional and academic development to prepare them for success in their chosen careers. Rochester is consistently recognized as one of the most livable cities in the country.

Our staff appreciates the safety, convenience, diversity, and entertainment and recreational options offered in the city. Trainees with families have found Rochester to be a wonderful place to raise children, and they have found a welcoming community among their colleagues, neighbors, and friends.

Belonging

We strive to recruit and develop clinical leaders who are representative of our broader community, and to foster a culture of safety and belonging for all staff, students, and patients.

Our faculty includes individuals from diverse cultural and clinical training backgrounds. Our program values facilitating personally and professionally supportive and affirming relationships between trainees and faculty.

Some resources available in our department and at Mayo Clinic include:

  • Dermatology Belonging Team. A group of members from all areas of the department who work together in supporting initiatives related to creating a culture of safety and belonging.
  • Educational Sessions. Presentations and training from faculty and guest lecturers during the year to discuss skin of color and topics related to a culture of safety and belonging.
  • EverybodylN Conversations. Virtual gatherings twice a month (open to all Mayo Clinic staff) to create a safe place to talk about belonging and our differences. Each conversation is led by a guest speaker and focuses on a different theme.
  • Mayo Employee Resource Groups (MERGs). Employee-led affinity groups to promote belonging, increase cultural awareness, and foster an environment of respect and inclusivity. Any Mayo Clinic employee can join a group of interest and choose their level of involvement.
  • The OUTList. An internal resource created by the LGBTI MERG that promotes community and visibility among faculty, staff, and trainees who are part of the LGBTI community. All Mayo employees are welcome to contact individuals on the OUTList for advice and networking.
  • The Student National Medical Association and National Medical Association conferences. Provides a place for you to share and learn best practices.
  • The Mayo Clinic Trainee Belonging Committee. A group that recruits and mentors applicants, including those from underrepresented backgrounds in medicine.
  • Paid vacation and benefits, insurance programs, and family services.
  • Access to free counseling service through Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education.
