Welcome to the Mayo Clinic General Surgery Residency. We have an outstanding accredited five-year residency training program at one of the premier medical centers in the United States.
The Mayo Clinic General Surgery Residency offers a broad experience in general surgery and its subspecialties. Graduates are well-prepared to enter private practice or go on to subspecialty fellowship training at the end of their time here. Residents get a wealth of clinical experience in addition to an incredible depth of research endeavors.
Our educational program focuses on creating the "whole surgeon." We expect our graduates to be technically outstanding while also incredibly astute clinical decision-makers. Our education program is robust and is known for its preceptorship concept, which many of the General Surgery services run upon. You have the opportunity to work one-on-one with some of the world's best surgeons.
More than 50,000 operations a year are performed at Mayo Clinic with a voluminous range of cases. Teamwork is a hallmark at Mayo, along with access to specialists in virtually any area of medicine. The lifestyle and work-life balance is exceptional, offering you an opportune environment in which to cultivate both your professional and personal interests.
Mayo Clinic offers numerous educational opportunities throughout your General Surgery Residency and extending into a number of fellowship programs. There is a widespread didactic experience as well as heavy simulation experience, particularly in the early years of training.
You are invited to read what our current residents are saying about our program. By hearing what those experienced residents have to say, you will gain an appreciation of the depth and breadth of our training program.
New track: Integrated Community and Rural Surgery
The Mayo Clinic General Surgery Residency is pleased to announce the addition of an Integrated Community and Rural Surgery Track to the residency. This will be a single position within the class of 10 categorical residents each year.
The individuals in the Integrated Community and Rural Surgery Track will meet the same requirements for graduation as the other trainees. However, a large portion of their fourth year will be spent at a variety of Mayo Clinic Health System community surgery sites. This will allow the trainees in this track to develop a broader knowledge in the areas of surgery needed to truly practice a wide range of community surgery. Trainees are exposed to some of the subspecialties not classically addressed in general surgery training, such as gynecologic surgery and otolaryngology (ENT).
This is a new track. The first few residents matched will be on the ground floor and help us to build this track. We feel that we have the opportunity to offer both outstanding subspecialty training while also meeting the needs of a broader base of training for community surgery. These trainees will also be exposed to the wealth of research and quality improvement projects offered to all trainees.
Students interested in practicing broad-based community or rural general surgery are encouraged to apply.
The Mayo Clinic General Surgery Residency is located in Rochester, Minnesota, approximately 80 miles southeast of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Rochester offers a safe, caring environment in which to train. There are innumerable resources for families, and the school system is considered exemplary. Trainees are within five to 20 minutes of work, no matter where they live in town.
Mayo Clinic offers you the perfect balance of high-level academic general surgery training while living in a smaller, more intimate community setting, which is optimal for resident quality of life.
We encourage you to look into the incredible wealth of experiences offered by our program.
