Kelly Bruce, M.D.

Medical school: University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health; Madison, WI

Residency: Kaiser Permanente; Santa Clara, CA

Hometown: Madison, WI

About me: I grew up in Wisconsin but have lived in six states in my adult life. I moved to Rochester from Tampa with my husband, son, and cattle dog. I chose Mayo Clinic for fellowship because of the long history of excellence in surgical education, the philosophy that the needs of the patient come first, and the collegiality of all of the physicians and staff. I have loved my fellowship experience and have been blessed with amazing co-fellows and mentors. When I am not at work, I try to spend as much time outside as possible. I enjoy biking, rollerblading, ultimate frisbee, and skiing. This winter, I am teaching my three-year-old son to swim, bake, and listen to jazz.

Conway Xu, M.D.

Conway Xu, M.D.

Medical school: University of California San Diego School of Medicine, San Diego, CA

Residency: Inova Fairfax Medical Campus Program; Falls Church, VA

Hometown: Potomac, MD

About me: I grew up in the DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia) metropolitan area, did all my schooling in SoCal, and consider myself fortunate to finish my medical training in the Midwest! Mayo Clinic’s gynecologic oncology fellowship truly embodies our “three shields” logo – clinical practice, education, and research. The unique apprenticeship model helps streamline continued clinical growth, especially in the OR. One particular highlight of training at Mayo is the surgical education which includes radical, four quadrant surgery and the opportunity to hone skills in several fresh cadaver labs throughout training. Looking back on my training experience thus far, Mayo Clinic has reinforced and embodied how patient care should be done. The collegiality and kindness across all members of the care team and other services is certainly something that I will emulate for the rest of my career. Outside of work, I enjoy staying active, following DC sports (Commanders and Wizards!), and recently have gotten into F1.

Medical school: Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, TN

Residency: Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN

About me: I have spent the majority of my life in the South but am really enjoying the Minnesota nice! I was drawn to Mayo for the apprenticeship model of surgical education, as well as the opportunity to train with gynecologic medical oncology experts. In our free time, my husband and I enjoy chasing around our young son, experimenting in the kitchen and cheering on the Vikings (for better or worse).

Simrit Warring, M.D.

Simrit Warring, M.D., M.S.

Medical school: Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, Rochester, MN

Residency: Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN

Hometown: Folsom, CA

About me: I am the daughter of first-generation immigrants and first in my family to work in anything medicine related. Born and raised in California. Made my way to Minnesota almost 10 years ago for my medical school training and never left. Mayo Clinic is a special place to train with outstanding role models and mentors. The bedside manner, surgical expertise, and evidence-based practice of medicine is unparalleled. I feel fortunate to train at this institution alongside the best co-fellows- they're truly inspiring and have developed what I am sure will be lifelong friendships! Life outside of fellowship is filled with a lot of joy and fun as my husband (Mayo Clinic neurosurgery resident) and I have the fortune of being parents to our two wonderful daughters (2.5yo, 8mo), Bernadoodle, and two cats.

About me: I chose Mayo Clinic because of its extensive experience in training and exceptional patient care. The Gynecologic Oncology program offers a comprehensive curriculum with a strong emphasis on surgical training, but also provides the flexibility to accommodate individual goals and aspirations. To date, this fellowship has been the most enriching training experience of my life. Outside of work, I enjoy traveling and immersing myself in different cultures whenever possible, as well as reading books and newspapers.

Stuart Ostby, M.D.

Stuart Ostby, M.D.

Medical school: Mayo Medical School; Rochester, MN

Residency: University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, AL

Hometown: Portland, OR

About me: Growing up in Portland, Oregon, I was accustomed to easy access to the beach, mountains, and great food. To my delight, these have all remained themes of my life in Rochester. Locally, I am part of the highly active running club, enjoy cycling, and am continually impressed by the schools and extracurricular opportunities available for my sons. Between residency and fellowship, my family lived and worked internationally, and we are grateful to be connected with the city's large international community.
