The most important indicator of the success of a training program is found in the outcomes of the graduates upon completion of their training. Here’s what some of our graduates have to say about their experience in the Hematopathology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

“I received an opportunity to come to Mayo Clinic initially as a research fellow in hematology in 2015. The collaborative and collegial environment coupled with exposure to a wide variety of cases and the ability to do research on rare diseases enabled me to choose Mayo pathology for both my residency and fellowship. Working with a diverse group of faculty every day was truly inspiring and enhanced the educational value of my training.”

“I expected to spend a year in a small town with few activities when I relocated to Rochester from New York City. But I was surprised and delighted by its vibe and activities. Rochester is a hidden gem, to say the least. The people were really pleasant and caring, and I can't recall a single day when I couldn't find something to do, a new restaurant to try, or an event to attend. The town buzzed with Rochesterians and visitors in the restaurants and parks during the summer. Hiking and stargazing were particularly enjoyable in the autumn. Even though it's cold in the winter, there was always a winter event to attend, such as ice skating or a concert at Mayo Civic Center.”

“I had a great experience living in Rochester. Especially with COVID, it became a very different and a new experience. It is a small town with a lot of things to do, be it outdoors or indoors. It is a good place to raise the kids too, plenty of opportunity. Some of the biggest plus points about Rochester is the safety of the town and the cleanliness. I enjoyed the natural beauty of this place and made some really good friends.”

“Rochester provides a very peaceful and convenient lifestyle which makes it easier to focus on work without struggling with the daily obstacles. I live within two blocks from the Hilton Building, where the hematopathology department is located, so I can walk to work in less than ten minutes daily! It is a great place for people who enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and biking, with plenty of parks and trails. Rochester also has an international airport that is very accessible and offers easy travel without having to drive to a big city.”

2021 graduate and current staff at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, Massachusetts.

“Rochester is such a pleasant blend of world-class medicine and a small-town environment. Life is simple; I walk to work, and believe it or not, I don’t miss being stuck in traffic. My wife and I are able to own a house, find a great work-life balance, and are able to enjoy more metropolitan activities in the nearby Twin Cities almost weekly. It’s pretty special to see a one-in-a-million diagnosis on a daily basis and always see a friend or colleague on trips to the grocery store.”

“The Division of Hematopathology at Mayo Clinic is a large group with specialists in all aspects of hematopathology. The breath of expertise, along with the large consultative volume through Mayo Clinic Laboratories, was especially attractive to me for a one-year fellowship due to the enriching and challenging cases diagnosed here.”

2020 graduate and current staff at University of Washington in Seattle, Washington.

"This is hands-down one of the best hematopathology fellowship programs. There is ample exposure to in-house cases and outside consults. The case volumes are good and work load is appropriate. The morphology, flow cytometry, molecular, and metabolic hematopathology labs are exceptional and well-established. The consultants are experts in their fields and are very approachable and accommodating and program directors are always open to feedback. The support staff is very knowledgeable and there are education specialists dedicated to trainee education."

"I really enjoyed working with every hematopathology consultant on case work and research projects. The clinical system works well for seeing a high volume of cases with experts in the field. The vast amount of cases seen in the short year ultimately prepare you for a strong career in hematopathology. A lot of autonomy is given to the fellow and this allows for real ownership of cases."

2015 graduate and current anatomic pathologist and clinical pathologist.

"I recall my year at Mayo as one of incredible professional growth. The large volume of in-house and consultation cases ensured I was exposed to both common and unusual diagnoses, and I learned to be comfortable working through a heavy service load. The consultants were not only content experts, but also concerned mentors who helped shape my career goals. In addition, the program had amazing support staff, technologists, and physician extenders who played a huge role in my education. Fellows were encouraged to work autonomously, and this made for a smooth transition into practice."

2012 graduate and current staff at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine.
