Meet Our Fellows

3 hematopathology fellows work together

Our fellows come from residencies around the U.S. and outside the country. Learn what a few of them have to say about our program.

Mazen Osman, M.B., B.Ch.

Mazen Osman, M.B., B.Ch.Why did you choose Mayo Clinic for your hematopathology fellowship experience? I chose Mayo Clinic because of the unparalleled clinical training, education, and research opportunities available to the fellows.  The fellowship curriculum is focused on the trainees’ education and provides broad-based experience in all aspects of both clinical and anatomic hematopathology.

Moreso, the breadth of cases and the diverse hematopathology faculty (who are enthusiastically engaged in teaching the fellows in all areas of hematopathology) are unique attributes of the program. I'm extremely grateful for this immense opportunity.

What do you wish you’d known about Mayo or Rochester before coming here? Nothing really as I was well acquainted with the city and Mayo before coming – a great community with Mayo’s world-renowned medical facility.

What is your favorite thing about Rochester? It’s a safe place to live with a fast-growing pace which is becoming a cultural hub for a cascade of different cultures and events.

What is living in Rochester, Minnesota, like for you and what do you do for fun? Rochester is a safe, healthy environment and has all the perks of a small town (no traffic, easy to get around, friendly community). There are parks and running trails, and I really enjoy a variety of entertainment. It’s enjoyable playing soccer here as there are multiple soccer leagues during the summer and winter.

Frido Bruehl, M.D.

Frido Bruehl, M.D.Why did you choose Mayo Clinic for your hematopathology fellowship experience? In order to gain subspecialty knowledge in any field of medicine, a high case volume is critical. I knew that at Mayo Clinic I would see a wide spectrum of cases and benefit from the expertise of the laboratory staff and consultants. The large case volume and sophisticated laboratory test menu also allow for ample availability of research opportunities. These circumstances are reflected in the famous “three Shields” of Mayo Clinic –  clinical practice, education, and research. I have found that the hematopathology fellowship at Mayo fully lives up to its aspirational mission goals.

What do you wish you’d known about Mayo or Rochester before coming here? I interviewed virtually and never visited Mayo or Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, before starting my fellowship. I’ve found that all my expectations were exceeded. The support on all levels is phenomenal and allows you to focus on your training.
