Overview

The one-year Internal Medicine Preliminary Residency at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, provides a solid foundation for further training in internal medicine or noninternal medicine specialties, such as anesthesiology, dermatology, neurology, ophthalmology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Although schedules vary slightly, preliminary medicine residents are otherwise indistinguishable from categorical residents and enjoy the same benefits and responsibilities.

As a resident at Mayo Clinic, you'll have access to robust clinical, educational, and research resources. You'll find support both inside and outside of the campus to promote physical and mental wellness and ensure your work/life balance.

Accreditation

The Internal Medicine Preliminary Residency is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Residents are included within the ACGME complement of the first year of the Internal Medicine Residency.

Certification

Residents are not eligible to obtain any board certifications for this one-year program, but the year does satisfy the eligibility criteria of many specialty programs for continued training toward certification — anesthesiology, dermatology, neurology, ophthalmology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Program history

The Internal Medicine Preliminary Residency at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester began in 1966. More than 775 physicians have completed training since that time. Each year, 26 residents complete training in this program.
