Accreditation
The Internal Medicine Preliminary Residency is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Residents are included within the ACGME complement of the first year of the Internal Medicine Residency.
Certification
Residents are not eligible to obtain any board certifications for this one-year program, but the year does satisfy the eligibility criteria of many specialty programs for continued training toward certification — anesthesiology, dermatology, neurology, ophthalmology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation.
Program history
The Internal Medicine Preliminary Residency at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester began in 1966. More than 775 physicians have completed training since that time. Each year, 26 residents complete training in this program.
