Curriculum

Two doctors from the Interventional Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Fellowship program in Arizona perform a procedure.

The Interventional Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Fellowship Program provides intense luminal intervention training with the goal of developing future leaders in the field. The program can be tailored to your individual needs, allowing greater emphasis on advanced resection, submucosal endoscopy, or other luminal techniques to facilitate your research and clinical interests.

In addition, the animal lab facility will be utilized to supplement the experience to develop adequate skills and conduct research.

Clinical training

Upon completion of the Interventional Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Fellowship Program, you should be able to:

  • Utilize advanced imaging modality and endoscopic ultrasound to diagnose and stage the luminal gastrointestinal diseases
  • Able to stratify the disease for treatment with endoscopic or surgical or multi-disciplinary approach
  • Describe risks and benefits of endoscopic advanced resection Demonstrate ability to perform advanced tissue resection and submucosal endoscopy
  • Able to treat complications associated with advanced tissue resection and submucosal endoscopy
  • Perform endoscopic suturing, tissue approximation, and effective clip placement
  • Perform incision therapy for complex stricture or membranous stricture
  • Describe the pros and cons of robotics-assisted luminal intervention
  • Perform endoscopic stent therapy and device-assisted endoscopy
  • Perform independent tissue ablations Demonstrate proper technique for EUS-guided fine needle aspiration or biopsy

Evaluation

To ensure adequate knowledge and technical skills are developed, the fellow's performance will be monitored carefully during his/her training. The fellow will be evaluated formally by the supervising faculty member on a regular basis and will meet with the program director to review these evaluations.

In addition, the fellow will regularly evaluate the faculty to ensure that the educational needs are being met. Additional plans will be made to supplement necessary experience in special procedures by modifying clinical schedules and adding animal lab time.
