Visiting Dental Student Externship

We encourage interested applicants to consider visiting for a one-week externship in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Mayo Clinic. This allows you to better understand how the residency is structured and to determine if it's a good match for your interests. It is a great way to get to know the program, the staff surgeons, residents, and culture, and see for yourself what Mayo Clinic has to offer for both patients and trainees.

An externship at Mayo Clinic offers exposure to the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery and helps you gain a feel for the residency experience. We want to maximize your experience here and can help you find a week to come when you will have a broad patient care experience and meet all of the staff.

Depending on the week, you will likely assist in:

  • Dentoalvolar and implant surgery
  • TMJ surgery
  • Head and neck pathology and reconstruction!
  • Orthognathic surgery
  • The outpatient surgery practice in the Gonda building
  • The consultation and follow-up clinic in the Mayo building
  • Inpatient surgery at the St. Mary's Hospital campus
  • Resident social activities after work hours

You are not required to take call or help with hospital consultations, but are welcome to do so with the residents, who take home call. You will participate in Mayo Clinic’s model of care and team dynamics. The extended exposure to our training program will help you understand much more than you would through an interview day. We look forward to reviewing your application!
