Curriculum

The 12-month Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship is designed to provide concentrated exposure to complex pediatric anesthesia, thereby affording a solid foundation for pediatric anesthesiologists to excel in either clinical practice or academic medicine.

As a Pediatric Anesthesia fellow, you will be assigned nine to 10 months of clinical patient care in operating room rotations at Wolfson Children's Hospital. You will participate in all pediatric surgical subspecialty cases, except solid organ transplantation. (Experience in anesthesia for solid organ transplantation is available through an elective rotation at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.) The fellowship incorporates pediatric pain management and postoperative care unit rotations into the Wolfson Children's Hospital operating room rotations.

Fellows are assigned to the pediatric or neonatal care unit for one to two months. You may also select a one-month elective at Wolfson Children's Hospital, any Mayo Clinic site, or Nemours Children's Clinic site.

Fellows may individually arrange for an elective rotation at another institution, pending approval of the program director. Nonclinical time for research, grand rounds presentations, and oral board preparation is distributed throughout the 12-month fellowship, averaging two to three days a month.

Didactics and education

In addition to clinical training, the curriculum includes formal didactics which take the following forms:

  • Morbidity and mortality conferences
  • Mock oral exams
  • Subspecialty lectures created specifically for our fellows (fellows also have access to daily morning conferences of our core program)
  • Quality improvement projects
  • Enterprise-wide grand rounds

Evaluation

To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop your technical skills, your performance will be monitored carefully during the course of this fellowship. You will be evaluated formally by your supervising faculty member after each clinical rotation, and you will meet with the program director to review these evaluations. In addition, you will regularly evaluate the faculty to ensure that your educational needs are being met.
