Meet Our Residents

Psychiatry residents and faculty gather together for a fun evening.

Our residents and faculty foster a collegial environment and education-focused culture that provides an inclusive learning experience. About 50% of our residents are typically female and a little over 16% of our trainees identify as an underrepresented minority. Training can be challenging, but our program is close-knit and each resident brings a dedication to providing stellar patient care as well as a collaborative learning experience.

Bashar Asir, M.B.B.S.

Hometown: Jenin, Palestine
Medical school: Jordan University of Science and Technology Faculty of Medicine
About me: I grew up in a small city in Palestine called Jenin, where my grandfather, a surgeon, built the first hospital in the area in 1948 to care for refugees of war. Setting this high standard for my family meant that my options after high school were to be a doctor or a disappointment (thanks a lot, Grandpa...). Witnessing the effects of war on mental health in my community, I developed a deep interest in the human psyche and chose to pursue a career in psychiatry. My clinical interests lie in mood disorders and integrating psychotherapeutic approaches into all patient care. My research focuses on neuromodulation, particularly brain stimulation for treatment-resistant depression. Outside of work, I’m a soccer enthusiast, and when I’m not watching or playing soccer, you’ll find me at the theater watching movies, enjoying meals with friends, or relaxing at home with music.

Hometown: Memphis, TN
Medical school: Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine
About me: I was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. My favorite quote is from James Baldwin: "Suffering is your bridge...many people have suffered before you, many people are suffering around... Clinically, I am interested in child/adolescent psychiatry and addiction psychiatry along with other passions such as education and advocacy. When I am not at work, you can find me either playing video games, watching anime, or telling stories at Brian's basement bar.

Brian Trieu, M.D., PhD

Hometown: San Diego, CA
Medical school: University of Minnesota Medical School
About me: I proliferated in my youth as a band geek and all-around nerd. I then went to the University of California Irvine for undergraduate training and spent extended time conducting research on mechanisms of neural plasticity. My self-described stubbornness led me to the MSTP at the University of Minnesota where I gravitated towards psychiatry and pursued a Ph.D. in basic neuroscience. I felt that Mayo Clinic was the ideal place to effectively synergize my training experiences toward excellent patient care while pursuing a career in academic psychiatry. When I’m not at work I try to keep the party going with my co-residents (sometimes at my basement bar), tending to my ever-growing indoor plant jungle, brewing beer, watching movies, and hyper-fixating on the next thing to nerd out on.
