Meet Our Residents

Psychiatry residents and faculty gather together for a fun evening.

Our residents and faculty foster a collegial environment and education-focused culture that provides an inclusive learning experience. About 50% of our residents are typically female and a little over 16% of our trainees identify as an underrepresented minority. Training can be challenging, but our program is close-knit and each resident brings a dedication to providing stellar patient care as well as a collaborative learning experience.

About me: I was born and raised in Hodag Country in Northern Wisconsin — a small town called Rhinelander. After undergraduate schooling, I spent over a year in Chicago doing clinical research at the Neuropsychiatric Institute at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I attended medical school at the University of Wisconsin — Go Badgers! I am especially passionate about working with individuals with severe mental illness. My current clinical research is focused on neurocognition in treatment-resistant populations. In my free time, I enjoy maintaining an active lifestyle, grilling out, traveling, and keeping up to date on the most recent futuristic science fiction movies and TV shows.

Casey Gilman, M.D.

Casey Gilman, M.D.

Hometown: Hampstead, NH
Medical school: San Juan Bautista School of Medicine
About me: I am a proud New Hampshire native and a major Boston sports fan, which I acknowledge and accept is not an attribute that anyone outside New England finds charming. Although I loved where I grew up, I always had a yearning to travel and learn about and from other cultures. I took the first opportunity I could get to move to the warm and beautiful island of Puerto Rico, where I could learn medicine and learn a new language simultaneously. Despite my now thin skin and intolerance to cold, I am thrilled to be at the Mayo Clinic with residents and staff who make you feel like family. My academic interests are broad and include patient advocacy, health disparities, neuropsychiatry, and research. When I’m not at Mayo, I enjoy practicing yoga, critiquing boxed mac n’ cheese, and playing with my two twin pup dogs, Sadie and Boomer.

I completed graduate school and medical school in Wisconsin and decided to stay in the Midwest as I found it to be a great place to work and raise a family. I enjoy exploring nature with my wife, Ling, and my two boys.

Pat Osterhaus, M.D.

Pat Osterhaus, M.D.

Medical school: University of Kentucky College of Medicine
About me: I moved around frequently due to my parents' work in the hospitality industry, spending the most time in Kentucky (high school through medical school). This led me to develop an appreciation for the importance of warmth and welcomeness, both with patients and coworkers. Mayo's approach to patient care and the culture within its psychiatry department has been a perfect match. Outside of work, I enjoy quality time with my fiancée and friends through board games, movies, and food.

Caleb Porter, M.D.

Caleb Porter, M.D.

Hometown: Orem, UT
Medical school: University of Utah School of Medicine
About me: Coming from a small town in Utah with five different national parks basically in my backyard, I quickly developed a love for nature. Whether it is trail-running, playing sports, rock climbing, kayaking, skiing, or snowshoeing, I am always itching to be outside and soak in the sun and serotonin. When I am not adventuring in the great outdoors, I am probably reading a book, learning a new language, playing dress-up with my kiddo and wife, strumming the guitar, or searching for a checkmate over the board. I love the biopsychosocial approach to medicine and feel that psychiatry is a perfect conduit for its application. My areas of interest include child and adolescent psychiatry, and psychiatric ethics.

About me: I was raised in Texas and stayed to attend college at University of Texas in Austin where I graduated with dual degrees in the liberal arts and biochemistry. I then moved to California for medical school where I developed an interest in visual media as a tool for health communication. Before graduating, I took a year off from medical school to write, direct, and film a feature-length independent film. I look forward to continuing to explore the intersections of film, narrative medicine, and mental health. Outside of the hospital, I can be found immersed in a good book, dancing west coast swing, or exploring the many green spaces around Rochester.

Bashar Asir, M.B.B.S.

Hometown: Jenin, Palestine
Medical school: Jordan University of Science and Technology Faculty of Medicine
About me: I grew up in a small city in Palestine called Jenin, where my grandfather, a surgeon, built the first hospital in the area in 1948 to care for refugees of war. Setting this high standard for my family meant that my options after high school were to be a doctor or a disappointment (thanks a lot, Grandpa...). Witnessing the effects of war on mental health in my community, I developed a deep interest in the human psyche and chose to pursue a career in psychiatry. My clinical interests lie in mood disorders and integrating psychotherapeutic approaches into all patient care. My research focuses on neuromodulation, particularly brain stimulation for treatment-resistant depression. Outside of work, I’m a soccer enthusiast, and when I’m not watching or playing soccer, you’ll find me at the theater watching movies, enjoying meals with friends, or relaxing at home with music.

Hometown: Memphis, TN
Medical school: Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine
About me: I was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. My favorite quote is from James Baldwin: "Suffering is your bridge...many people have suffered before you, many people are suffering around... And all you can do is bring hopefully a little light into that suffering, enough light to the person who is suffering can begin to comprehend his suffering, and begin to live with it and begin to change it, to change his situation." Clinically, I am interested in child/adolescent psychiatry and addiction psychiatry along with other passions such as education and advocacy. Brian Trieu, M.D., PhD

Hometown: San Diego, CA
Medical school: University of Minnesota Medical School
About me: I proliferated in my youth as a band geek and all-around nerd. I then went to the University of California Irvine for undergraduate training and spent extended time conducting research on mechanisms of neural plasticity. My self-described stubbornness led me to the MSTP at the University of Minnesota where I gravitated towards psychiatry and pursued a Ph.D. in basic neuroscience. I felt that Mayo Clinic was the ideal place to effectively synergize my training experiences toward excellent patient care while pursuing a career in academic psychiatry. When I’m not at work I try to keep the party going with my co-residents (sometimes at my basement bar), tending to my ever-growing indoor plant jungle, brewing beer, watching movies, and hyper-fixating on the next thing to nerd out on.
