Department and Faculty

Faculty members for Mayo Clinic's Surgical Pathology Fellowship are:

  • Leaders in their subspecialty fields nationally and internationally
  • Committed to educating the future generation of surgical pathologists
  • Conducting cutting-edge research, in collaboration with other Mayo Clinic divisions, with the goal of enhancing patient care

The Division of Anatomic Pathology at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, has more than 60 pathologists, with subspecialty expertise covering the entire field of surgical pathology. The division's faculty is organized around working groups dedicated to subspecialty areas, as well as general areas such as the frozen section lab, autopsy, and cytology.

The hospital surgical pathology practice at Mayo Clinic is unique in its heavy reliance on rapid frozen section diagnosis, providing fellows a valuable opportunity for immediate correlation of gross and microscopic pathology. More than 100,000 frozen sections slides are interpreted annually.

The division is supported by full-service laboratories in:

  • Histology
  • Cytopathology
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • Molecular anatomic pathology
  • Molecular genetics
  • Cytogenetics

From the directorJennifer Boland, M.D.

Welcome to the Mayo Clinic Surgical Pathology Fellowship.

I feel that a concentrated year in surgical pathology after my residency training provided me with a strong knowledge base and confidence that has helped me in my practice of general pathology, as well as my subspecialty area of pulmonary pathology.

I am honored to serve as the fellowship director within a department built on a strong foundation of educational excellence — one that began in 1918 when Drs. William J. and Charles H. Mayo introduced the concept of physician training by residency.

Aside from state-of-the-art facilities, the outstanding curriculum and the diverse clinical exposure, what sets Mayo Clinic apart are the people. The principles of teamwork, partnership and family were important to the Mayo brothers. These principles continue to have a major impact on the practice of medicine and education throughout the institution. At Mayo Clinic, you will find the best people who work together as a team to offer outstanding patient care.

The goal of our Surgical Pathology Fellowship is to train excellent pathologists who will become leaders in the field of pathology, as well as in their communities.

I am very enthusiastic about our fellowship. I am confident that once you have seen what Mayo Clinic's Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has to offer, you will definitely consider training here.
