Histology Technician Program graduates: Where are they now?
After attending a Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences Open House and seeing the histology facilities for the first time, I was amazed at the artistry of the histologic process. I immediately knew I wanted to gain those skills that contributed to a patient diagnosis. Thanks to the well-tailored Histology Technician Program, I was fully equipped with essential skills in teamwork, histologic technique, and problem-solving.
Linh Mai, HT(ASCP)
Completed the RCTC 1+1 enrollment option and now works as a histology technician in the Mayo Clinic histology lab
Histology gives me the ability to have a large carbon footprint on patient care while still getting to work in a lab setting. Histology opens the door for so many opportunities in the career field with the growing demand for HT’s and HTL’s! The program set me up for success by teaching me the tools, processes, and troubleshooting to get the best possible product in a timely manner. It also prepared me greatly to move into management and leadership roles through teamwork and communication.
Josh Thompson, HTL(ASCP)
After the program, Josh began his career as a histotechnologist at Mayo Clinic, and is now an assistant supervisor in the Frozen Section Lab.
I have a background in chemistry and was really interested in furthering my career and helping people. Histology facilitated that by allowing me to use my skills in combination with the new class material that I was being exposed to and help people.
Heba Abseh, HTL(ASCP)
Heba was able to translate her background in chemistry into a career and is now an education specialist in the Mayo Clinic histology lab.
Advancement opportunities for histology technicians
There are many ways you can advance within histology depending on your career goals. Many students go on to advance into leadership, education, and management, or with further training, go onto more research-focused specialized areas, sales and technology support, or quality assurance. Some also use it as a steppingstone to advanced degrees within pathology such as a pathologists’ assistant.
