My favorite memory was learning about the different and unique areas in the pharmacy field. Also, recognizing the importance of collaboration among peers and healthcare providers to ensure the best outcome for the patient. This was one aspect I got to experience firsthand during one of my rotations at Mayo Clinic, where I was able to translate concerns and feelings about a treatment for a patient whose primary language was not English.

I would say the focus on professional development is the most unique part of this internship. I know it has been a large focus for the Mayo Clinic Pharmacy Department with good reason. It allows you to not only develop your hard skills, but also the soft skills that revolve around emotional intelligence and communication.

“Monday Question of the Day! Our Program Director would pose a question to our cohort and we would all go around the room answering the question. Sometimes the questions were focused on professional aspirations, while other times they were more personal or just a random fun question. Two of my favorites were focused on who we consider our hero and our most embarrassing moments. I remember laughing, crying, and feeling very appreciative of all of our backgrounds that brought us to the internship. It was a great way to get to know our co-interns, have some laughs, and start off the week on a high note.”

It was incredible to build such strong relationships, not only with the other interns, but also with numerous pharmacists across Mayo Clinic. I cherish the time I had working alongside such incredible talent and knowledge as it helped me grow as an individual and professional. I started the internship not knowing exactly what path I wanted to take as a pharmacist, but I was able to gain many mentors who helped me find my way and set me up for success as I enter the professional world.
