Mentorship
We’re deeply committed to building a comprehensive network of mentors for you. This process begins early in the transitional year where you're given a faculty mentor and a resident mentor (from the PGY-2 class).
Faculty mentors meet with you biannually and help provide career-specific guidance. As you progress through your residency, you often gain additional mentors in you area of clinical and research interests.
Resident peer mentorship was created to promote close supportive relationships inside and out of work.
Career development lectures are available for all Mayo Clinic residents and fellows, with neurology-specific career lectures held several times each year. Resources for curriculum vitae crafting, writing research grants, and participating in a resident leadership program are available.
It has been a great pleasure and honor to participate in our neurology residency mentorship program. I'm a product of this residency program and was extremely fortunate when I was a resident to have incredible mentors who opened many doors and helped me realize my potential. It's rewarding to play a role in mentorship pairings, given how important these relationships are during residency and in the years beyond.
Cumara O'Carroll, M.D., M.P.H.
Mayo Clinic assistant professor of neurology, mentor
Since PGY-1, having Dr. O’Carroll as my mentor has allowed me to gain perspective and opportunities that I otherwise would not have been able to experience. She provides individualized advice tailored to my specific career, research, and education goals. I'm extremely grateful for Dr. O'Carroll's commitment to her role as my mentor! I truly believe it has made all the difference in terms of my experience here at Mayo Clinic.
