    • Upload each required item in the Supplemental Items Section.
    • Complete the Recommendation Request section.

Note: Appointments to the breast imaging fellowship are made through the Radiology Fellowship Match which is sponsored by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI). The SBI fellowship match program website provides a wealth of information about the breast fellowship match. We do follow important dates set forth each year by the SBI.

Applicants considered for an appointment will be invited for a personal interview with the program director and selected faculty.

Frequently asked questions (and answers)

When should I apply?

The application and all supporting documentation should be submitted approximately 1.5 years preceding the program start date.  For those still in residency, that is typically within the fall of their third year.

What is the earliest date that I can apply?

Because we follow the SBI guidelines, we cannot begin accepting applications until the SBI Fellowship Match application start date.

What is the application deadline?

The breast imaging fellowship application deadline is Dec. 10. If you're unable to meet this deadline, contact the program coordinator.

When does the program begin reviewing applications?

Typically not before Dec. 16.

When does the program begin offering interviews?

We usually send offers for interviews starting in early January, but continue to offer interviews through the first week of February given our application deadline of Dec. 10.

When does the Breast Imaging Fellowship conduct their interviews, and what is the format?

We typically conduct our interviews January-March, adhering to current Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) guidelines.

Interviews may be virtual or in-person depending on guidance from SBI, the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments (SCARD), and Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education. The interview format will be disclosed at the time interview invites are extended.

Does the program use the SBI Fellowship Match Universal Application?

Yes, visit the Society of Breast Imaging website for the fellowship application.

Do I need to register for the match?

Yes, all applicants must register for the breast imaging fellowship match in addition to sending application and supporting documents to the program coordinator.

What is the breakdown of rotations?

Fellows are exposed to all facets of breast imaging including screening/diagnostic mammograms, ultrasound, MRI, contrast enhanced mammography, molecular breast imaging, and image-guided breast interventions (stereotactic, ultrasound, MRI, and contrast mammogram biopsies as well as seed localizations and sentinel lymph node injections).

How many months are spent on breast versus non-breast services?

Rotations are designed as 13 four-week blocks, and fellows are given the opportunity to select 2-3 elective blocks. Fellows will also spend 2-4 weeks rotating in the breast clinic with breast surgeons, oncologists, and women’s health internists.

What is the number of, and location of, site(s) the fellows will rotate through?

Mayo Clinic rotations are at the main hospital campus in Phoenix, Arizona. Fellows have an opportunity to rotate at a local academic center named Valleywise in Phoenix.

What is the lecture schedule?

Dedicated breast fellow conferences are scheduled throughout the year and are given by breast radiologists and breast clinic staff (breast surgeons, oncologists, and women’s health internists).

What is the multidisciplinary conference schedule?

Fellows will participate in weekly multidisciplinary conferences with breast radiologists and breast clinic providers.

Are there any moonlighting opportunities?

Fellows in good standing in the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Arizona Breast Imaging Fellowship are approved for both internal and external moonlighting responsibilities. Internal responsibilities include contrast reaction coverage for the Department and local practices as well as clinical radiology opportunities at local practices.

Are there any research opportunities?

Participation in a research project is encouraged during the fellowship.  Many of our fellows are successful in publishing in peer-reviewed journals and often present at national meetings. Fellows are provided dedicated research time to accomplish academic interests.

Are there any education opportunities?

During rotations in breast imaging fellows can expect a dynamic reading room environment with residents and medical students frequently rotating through the department. It is encouraged for fellows to participate in the education of these learners both at the viewing stations as well as via formal or informal conferences.

What benefits are offered to the fellows?
