The Cardiothoracic Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support Surgery Fellowship is an advanced one-year fellowship offered through the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota. The fellowship develops proficiency in surgical implantation and medical management of mechanical circulatory devices and heart transplants.

In this fellowship, you are involved in patient selection, preoperative optimization of patients, implantation of devices, heart transplantation, and postoperative care and management of patients. Additionally, you participate in the evaluation of donor hearts and travel for donor organ procurement.

Other educational and training programs for mechanical circulatory support and cardiac transplantation are offered in the form of conferences, grand rounds and a journal club.

Program history

The Cardiothoracic Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support Surgery Fellowship at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, was established in 1988. Our alumni include numerous surgeons practicing around the world. We anticipate that one trainee will complete this program annually.
