Curriculum

Clinical training

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota will provide you with a well-rounded education, balanced with generous elective time and academic time to meet your specific career goals.

Teaching opportunities

During fellowship you will develop skills in teaching and supervision of Psychiatry residents, Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine students, and visiting students from other medical schools through bedside instruction on Generose 1-West, the Child and Adolescent Acute Psychiatric Care Inpatient Unit.

Fellows interested in further development of their skills as education leaders are invited to participate in multiple levels of trainee teaching, including co-facilitating the child and adolescent psychiatry interest group at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, serving as a small group facilitator as medical students learn psychiatric interviewing skills, and teaching child and adolescent psychiatry topics in junior resident seminars.

Leadership opportunities

As many of our graduates continue on to assume leadership positions, during your training you will have the opportunity to gain experience in a number of administrative capacities. All fellows are members of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Education Committee (CAPEC) as full voting members, contributing to decisions about curriculum and policy in the fellowship program. Fellows also have the opportunity for additional administrative roles including membership on committees including Equity, Inclusion and Diversity, Graduate Medical Education, clinical practice, hospital operations, quality improvement, and research.

You will also have the opportunity to be considered for the role of chief fellow in your second year. Chief fellows serve as education leaders and play a significant role in orienting the incoming class, coordinating fellow education, and in recruiting of future fellows.

Call

There is no call responsibility in Year 1. In Year 2, fellows will select a total of four weeks of call to gain experience in assuming attending physician call responsibilities. Responsibilities include rounding on the inpatient unit, emergency department, and consult-liaison service over the weekend and phone call from home after hours in which fellows supervise residents in the emergency room. Each week-long call is with full back-up by a faculty member. Fellows receive compensation days for weekend coverage time.

Evaluation

To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop your skills, your performance is continuously assessed via multiple means including:

  • Regular, individualized verbal and written faculty feedback based on direct observation
  • Semi-annual reviews with program directors
  • Annual participation in the PRITE
  • Clinical practice opportunities to complete Clinical Skills Verification Examinations

In addition, you will complete regular evaluations of faculty and the curriculum via anonymous formal web-based evaluations, regular meetings with the program director, and the annual program evaluation to ensure that your educational needs are being met and for continuous improvement of the program.
