Mayo Clinic's Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology in Rochester, Minnesota, is one of the largest clinical laboratories in the world. A highly skilled team of medical professionals including physicians, scientists, medical technologists, medical technicians, lab assistants, biologists, chemists, microbiologists, geneticists, and other specialists work collaboratively.

The divisions of Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology, Clinical Core Laboratory Services, and Laboratory Genetics provide qualitative and quantitative analysis of biological fluids, such as blood, serum or plasma, urine, or tissues for specific chemical constituents or physiologic processes. Physicians use these test results to screen for, diagnose, or monitor disease.

Mayo Clinic Laboratories is the referral center for Mayo Clinic. Mayo Clinic Laboratories specializes in esoteric laboratory testing for health care organizations throughout the United States and around the world. The mission of Mayo Clinic Laboratories is to support the local delivery of laboratory services through the provision of exceptional reference laboratory services and by providing support services that facilitate and augment community integration efforts.

Program leadership

Maria Alice Willrich, Ph.D.

Program Director

Dr. Maria Alice Willrich serves as the Director of Clinical Chemistry Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. She is a laboratory director for the Protein Immunology, Antibody Immunology, and Clinical Mass Spectrometry Laboratories. Since joining the faculty, she has been heavily involved in mentoring fellows and residents, and formerly served as associate director for the Clinical Chemistry Postdoctoral Fellowship program from 2018-2022. Her research interests span the areas of complement, monoclonal antibody therapies, monoclonal gammopathies, and CSF testing, and she has several publications in all of those areas.

Jeffrey Meeusen, Ph.D.

Associate Program Director

Dr. Jeff Meeusen serves as the Associate Program Director for the Clinical Chemistry Fellowship program. He is also co-director of the Cardiovascular Laboratory Medicine program, the Clinical Specialty Laboratory, and Laboratory Services at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Meeusen is involved with training programs for clinical residents and fellows, medical laboratory scientists and phlebotomists with the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. His research and operational activities are primarily focused on lipids and lipoproteins. In addition, he has several publications on the clinical impact of calculated laboratory parameters such as low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, estimated glomerular filtration rate and multi-marker risk scores.
