How to apply

The application and all supporting documentation must be submitted by Jan. 15 of your CA-2 year. The academic year begins in July.

You must apply through SF Match, a third-party application service.

  1. Visit the SF Match website. All applications to Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education (MCSGME) programs must include these application materials. In addition to these materials, please include:

    - Three original letters of recommendation (it is strongly encouraged to have one from your program director, though this is not required)
    - Copies of either USMLE or COMLEX scores
    - Copies of In-Training Exam (ITE) scores
    - A personal statement explaining why you want to pursue critical care and any career aspirations

  2. Appointments are made through the Critical Care Anesthesiology Fellowship Match sponsored by SF Match.
  3. Applicants considered for an appointment will be invited to visit Mayo Clinic for a personal interview with the program director and selected faculty. Interviews are generally conducted in March and/or April.

Visit the SF Match website for the standardized application form and important dates for this year’s match calendar.

Exceptions to SF Match

Positions may be offered with an exemption from SF Match if you qualify according to the rules and regulations set forth by the Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists (SOCCA). Email us if you have questions or need clarification on the process to be offered a position as an exception to SF Match or review the SOCCA's match exception policies.

Dual applicants

Mayo Clinic not only provides the best training in anesthesiology critical care medicine but also the best training in adult cardiovascular anesthesia. Please refer to the Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship page if you are interested in ACA training. While we do not reserve a set number of dedicated spots for dual applicants each year, we do accept dual applicants on a case-by-case basis and are happy to explore that possibility with you and our sister ACA program.

Emergency medicine applicants

We do not offer training pathways for emergency medicine-trained applicants. However, Mayo Clinic’s outstanding Critical Care Internal Medicine Fellowship accepts EM-trained applicants through the American Board of Internal Medicine. We are integrated with them in much of our didactics and clinical experience and together provide broad-based training in all aspects of critical care.
