Overview

This 24-month Interventional Radiology Independent Residency program at Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Florida, is designed to prepare physicians for careers in academic radiology or private practice.

The program offers:

Our emphasis on education over service ensures you have the finest teaching and the broadest patient care experience possible during residency.

Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Florida, is a destination medical center. The interventional radiology division offers high-level care with a strong presence in interventional oncology, transplantation, pulmonary intervention, arterial and venous interventions including complex IVC filter retrieval, women’s and men's health, gastrointestinal and genitourinary intervention, liver disease, and portal hypertension. The interventional radiology service performs a high volume of quality invasive, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures each year by eight board-certified interventional radiologists in a modern facility with six interventional suites. A modern outpatient clinic exclusively dedicated to the interventional radiology division supports a thriving consultation practice and allows for longitudinal care of interventional radiology patients.

The field of interventional radiology has undergone tremendous growth led by improvements in imaging quality, miniaturization and development of medical devices, and the exponential growth of computing power. At Mayo Clinic this growth and innovation is always centered around the needs of the patient and providing the best patient care and teamwork within a multidisciplinary setting. The interventional radiology service prides itself on learning about each patient, developing a relationship, and executing safe and effective treatment plans tailored to their needs.

The interventional radiology division also provides vascular imaging services that include CT and MR angiography.

The Interventional Radiology Independent Residency at Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Florida was approved in 2016. We anticipate that one trainee will complete this program annually. We have had one graduate who is board certified and who is currently practicing at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, and the 2025-2026 position is filled.

After successfully completing the Interventional Radiology Independent Residency, you will be a highly qualified well-rounded interventional radiologist able to deliver high-quality clinical and procedural care in the academic or private practice setting.

Accreditation

The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Certifications

Graduates of the Interventional Radiology Independent Residency qualify to take the Interventional Radiology/Diagnostic Radiology (IR/DR) examination offered by the American Board of Radiology (ABR).

Program history

The American Board of Medical Specialties approved the American Board of Radiology request for a primary certification of interventional radiology in September 2014. The intent of the independent residency in vascular and interventional radiology (VIR) is to focus the training experience in the clinical diagnosis and care of patients with diseases commonly treated by an interventional radiologist.

The Interventional Radiology Independent Residency at Mayo Clinic's campus in Florida was approved in 2016. We anticipate that one trainee will complete this program annually.
