Program history

The American Board of Medical Specialties approved the American Board of Radiology request for a primary certification of interventional radiology in September 2014. The intent of the independent residency in vascular and interventional radiology (VIR) is to focus the training experience in the clinical diagnosis and care of patients with diseases commonly treated by an interventional radiologist.

The Interventional Radiology Independent Residency at Mayo Clinic's campus in Florida was approved in 2016. We anticipate that one trainee will complete this program annually.
