Overview

This 24-month Interventional Radiology Independent Residency program is offered at Mayo Clinic's Jacksonville, Florida, campus. The program is designed to prepare physicians for careers in academic radiology or private practice.

Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Florida, is a destination medical center. The interventional radiology division provides high-level care across a wide range of subspecialty areas. These include interventional oncology, transplantation, pulmonary intervention, and arterial and venous interventions. Additional areas include women's and men's health, gastrointestinal and genitourinary intervention, liver disease, and portal hypertension. Eight board-certified interventional radiologists perform a high volume of invasive, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures annually. The service operates in a modern facility with six interventional suites. A modern outpatient clinic dedicated to the Interventional Radiology Division supports a thriving consultation practice. It also provides longitudinal care for interventional radiology patients.

The field of interventional radiology has undergone tremendous growth through advances in imaging, medical devices, and computing power. At Mayo Clinic, this growth and innovation are always centered on patient needs and exceptional care. Patient care is delivered through collaboration and teamwork within a multidisciplinary setting. The Interventional Radiology Service prides itself on learning about each patient and developing meaningful relationships. The team delivers safe, effective treatment plans tailored to each patient's individual needs.

The interventional radiology division also provides vascular imaging services, including CT and MR angiography.

The Interventional Radiology Independent Residency at Mayo Clinic's Jacksonville, Florida, campus was approved in 2016. The program anticipates graduating one trainee annually. One graduate is board-certified and currently practices at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. The 2025-2026 position is filled, reflecting continued interest in the program.

After completing the Interventional Radiology Independent Residency, you will be a highly qualified, well-rounded interventional radiologist. You will be prepared to deliver high-quality clinical and procedural care in academic or private practice settings.

Accreditation

The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Certifications

Graduates of the Interventional Radiology Independent Residency qualify to take the Interventional Radiology/Diagnostic Radiology (IR/DR) examination offered by the American Board of Radiology (ABR).

Program history

The American Board of Medical Specialties approved the request for primary certification in interventional radiology. The request was submitted by the American Board of Radiology in September 2014. The Independent Residency in Vascular and Interventional Radiology (VIR) focuses the training experience on clinical diagnosis and care. Training emphasizes diseases commonly treated by interventional radiologists.

The Interventional Radiology Independent Residency at Mayo Clinic's campus in Florida was approved in 2016. We anticipate that one trainee will complete this program annually.
