Overview

The Women's Health Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, provides a flexible one- to two-year postgraduate education experience in the rich academic and clinical environment. Our goal is to train academic physicians who wish to be positioned as national leaders in the field of women's health.

Unique program opportunities include:

Program history

The Women's Health Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, will begin in July 2025. We anticipate one fellow will complete this program annually.

Positions

One position is available on a competitive basis every year for the Women's Health Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. The fellowship begins on July 1 of each recruitment year.

Qualifications

Applicants for the Women’s Health Fellowship are considered from Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and Obstetrics and Gynecology residencies.

Curriculum

The Women's Health Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, is a flexible program that can meet your individual career goals.

Clinical training

As a fellow, you can participate in clinical rotations under the supervision of expert faculty across multiple disciplines relevant to women's health. You will work with world experts in the fields of menopause, sexual and breast health, integrative medicine, contraception, PCOS, and others along with multidisciplinary specialties like gynecology, women’s heart clinic, endocrinology, and more.

The curriculum includes formal lectures, journal club, bedside teaching, women's health grand rounds, breast health meetings, and internal medicine grand rounds.

There are three academic tracks to choose from:

  • Clinical Research
  • Medical Education Scholarship
  • Quality Improvement

Each academic track is designed to have appropriate coursework and mentorship to provide training, projects, and practical experience to jumpstart an academic career in women's health.

Taryn Smith, M.D.Our fellowship program aims to develop excellence in clinical practice, education, and research with a focus on women's health. We will train you to become proficient, professional, and compassionate physician scholars, emphasizing critical thinking, lifelong learning, and technical skills.

You will gain extensive experience through rotations in gynecology, endocrinology, breast imaging, breast oncology, women's health cardiology, and various electives.

Department and faculty

As a fellow in the Women's Health Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, you will have the opportunity to train under experts in our women's health consultative clinics, which include menopause, sexual health, headaches and hormones, contraceptive counseling, PCOS, integrative medicine, breast health services, and more.

One of the greatest advantages of training at Mayo Clinic is the approachability, accessibility, and collegiality of the faculty. In addition to caring for patients in clinical practice, Mayo Clinic's faculty is committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Many of our faculty members have published and lectured extensively and are highly regarded in their fields.

You will work closely with these individuals throughout your training in the Women’s Health Fellowship. You have direct access to the women’s health faculty at Mayo Clinic throughout your training in this fellowship and future practice.

Meet the faculty

Taryn Smith, M.D.

Taryn Smith, M.D.

Program Director

Dr. Taryn Smith is a board-certified Internist specializing in women's health, menopause, sexual health, and osteoporosis. She completed her residency at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, and a fellowship in Women’s Health at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

 

Dr. Smith currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and as a consultant in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. She is an active member of several professional organizations and has received numerous accolades, including the Above and Beyond Award from Mayo Clinic. Dr. Smith is dedicated to mentoring medical students and residents and is deeply involved in community service.

 

Dr. Smith has a robust record of scholarly activity, contributing to peer-reviewed articles, presentations at national conferences, and various quality improvement projects. She also dedicates time to mentoring medical students and residents, underscoring her commitment to the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Jackie Thielen, M.D.

Jackie Thielen, M.D.

Professor of Medicine
Chair, Women’s Health Internal Medicine

Dr. Jackie Thielen, M.D., is a board-certified internist at Mayo Clinic, specializing in women's health. She earned her M,D. from the University of Minnesota and completed her residency at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital.

 

Dr. Thielen has received numerous awards, including the Clinical Excellence Award, and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians. Her professional interests include cancer, menopause, and sexual medicine. She is an affiliate member of the International Society for Sexual Medicine and a Diversity Champion at Mayo Clinic.

Wellness initiatives

As a trainee, your physical and mental health are priorities to Mayo Clinic and the department. Trainees have access to several resources to promote well-being, as well as time off clinical duties to attend appointments.

Fitness centers

Residents and fellows have access to exclusive discounts with the YMCA in Jacksonville, Florida, which has several locations.

Coming in 2024, Mayo Clinic will have its own newly built facility on campus.

Groups on campus

Mayo Employee Resource Group (MERG) in FloridaOpportunities to join a variety of groups on campus provide regular social activities and can help enhance your training while connecting with a broad group of peers.

Trainees will have the opportunity to join a Mayo Employee Resource Group (MERG) at any time during their training program. Current MERGs on the Florida campus include groups based on African, Asian, and Latino heritage as well as groups focused on veterans, global health volunteering, professional development, family resources and events, and LGBTI and differently-abled staff and allies. 

Well-being

Cardiovascular diseases fellow works on a computer at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.The Student Services office provides resources to promote academic, emotional, social, cognitive, financial, and physical well-being. Career and academic services include academic advising, peer tutoring, and accommodations for learners with disabilities or health conditions. Mental health services, counseling, interview practice, and a variety of enrichment sessions on topics like budgeting, resiliency, and stress and burn-out are also available through the Student Services office.

Stipend and benefits

Mayo Fellows Association (MFA)

The Mayo Fellows Association (MFA) offers a peer and social support network for residents and fellows and their families with social events, athletics, and advocacy. The MFA also holds an annual resident and fellow appreciation event open to all trainees with complimentary massages, stress-reducing activities, and social support.
