Overview
The Women's Health Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, provides a flexible one- to two-year postgraduate education experience in a rich academic and clinical environment. Our goal is to train academic physicians who wish to be positioned as national leaders in the field of women's health.

Program history
The Women's Health Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, will begin in July 2025. We anticipate one fellow will complete this program annually.

Positions
One position is available on a competitive basis every year for the Women's Health Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. The fellowship begins on July 1 of each recruitment year.
Qualifications
Applicants for the Women’s Health Fellowship are considered from Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and Obstetrics and Gynecology residencies. At this time, we do not offer visa sponsorship.

Curriculum
The Women's Health Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, is a flexible program that can meet your individual career goals.
Clinical training
As a fellow, you can participate in clinical rotations under the supervision of expert faculty across multiple disciplines relevant to women's health. You will work with world experts in the fields of menopause, sexual and breast health, integrative medicine, contraception, PCOS, and others along with multidisciplinary specialties like gynecology, women’s heart clinic, endocrinology, and more.
The curriculum includes formal lectures, journal club, bedside teaching, women's health grand rounds, breast health meetings, and internal medicine grand rounds.
There are three academic tracks to choose from:
- Clinical Research
- Medical Education Scholarship
- Quality Improvement
Each academic track is designed to have appropriate coursework and mentorship to provide training, projects, and practical experience to jumpstart an academic career in women's health.

Our fellowship program aims to develop excellence in clinical practice, education, and research with a focus on women's health. We will train you to become proficient, professional, and compassionate physician scholars, emphasizing critical thinking, lifelong learning, and technical skills.
You will gain extensive experience through rotations in gynecology, endocrinology, breast imaging, breast oncology, women's health cardiology, and various electives.

Department and faculty
As a fellow in the Women's Health Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, you will have the opportunity to train under experts in our women's health consultative clinics, which include menopause, sexual health, headaches and hormones, contraceptive counseling, PCOS, integrative medicine, breast health services, and more.
One of the greatest advantages of training at Mayo Clinic is the approachability, accessibility, and collegiality of the faculty. In addition to caring for patients in clinical practice, Mayo Clinic's faculty is committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Many of our faculty members have published and lectured extensively and are highly regarded in their fields.
You will work closely with these individuals throughout your training in the Women’s Health Fellowship. You have direct access to the women’s health faculty at Mayo Clinic throughout your training in this fellowship and future practice.
Meet the faculty
Taryn Smith, M.D.Program Director Dr. Taryn Smith is a board-certified Internist specializing in women's health, menopause, sexual health, and osteoporosis. She completed her residency at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, and a fellowship in Women’s Health at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Dr. Smith currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and as a consultant in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. She is a certified menopause practitioner and an active member of The Menopause Society, as well as the International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health (ISSWSH). Dr. Smith is an active member of several professional organizations and has received numerous accolades, including the Above and Beyond Award from Mayo Clinic. She is dedicated to mentoring medical students and residents and is deeply involved in community service.
Dr. Smith has a robust record of scholarly activity, contributing to peer-reviewed articles, presentations at national conferences, and various quality improvement projects. She also dedicates time to mentoring medical students and residents, underscoring her commitment to the next generation of healthcare professionals. |

Stephanie Faubion, M.D., M.B.A.Professor and Chair, Department of Medicine Dr. Faubion is Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, Director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Women’s Health and the Medical Director of The Menopause Society.
She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin and medical school and residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. She received her Master of Business Administration at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota in 2019.
Her clinical research interests include menopause and sexual health in women. She is co-Principal Investigator for the Data Registry on Experiences of Aging, Menopause and Sexuality (DREAMS). She serves as editor of the journal, Menopause and is on the editorial board of Maturitas. She is the author of The New Rules of Menopause: A Mayo Clinic Guide to Perimenopause and Beyond. She is an innovator in women’s health and aims to better serve women in the menopause transition and beyond. |

Chrisandra Shufelt, M.D.Chair, Division of General Internal Medicine Dr. Chrisandra Shufelt, M.D., MS, FACP, NCMP, is the Chair of the Division of General Internal Medicine, Senior Consultant at the Mayo Clinic Women's Health, and Associate Director of Women's Health Research Center at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. Dr. Shufelt is a women's health internist with fellowship training in vascular biology and women's health and a certified menopause practitioner.
She has several National and International leadership roles in the American College of Physicians, the European Menopause and Andropause Society and the North American Menopause Society where she is the current President of the Society and on the board of trustees. Dr. Shufelt has over 200 publications in women's health and has also co-authored several scientific position statements on menopause and hormone therapy. Her NIH-funded research focuses on young women with hypothalamic amenorrhea evaluating the impact on immune and vascular health. |

Jackie Thielen, M.D.Assistant Professor of Medicine, Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine Dr. Jackie Thielen is a board-certified internist at Mayo Clinic, specializing in women's health. She earned her M.D. from the University of Minnesota and completed her residency and chief residency at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital. Dr. Thielen became a member of staff at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in 1994. She was a founding member of the Women’s Health Clinic in 2005 which is now called the Menopause and Women’s Sexual Health Clinic. Upon transferring to the Mayo Clinic Florida campus in 2019, she established the Women’s Health Specialty Clinic.
Dr. Thielen has received awards, including the Clinical Excellence Award, and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians. She is a member of the Menopause Society and a menopause certified practitioner. Her professional interests include cancer, menopause, and sexual medicine. Dr. Thielen is interested in education and has been active in educating medical learners at all levels. She is also regularly asked to participate in community engagement regarding women’s health. |

Mayo Clinic residents or fellows can experience 24/7 free access to the Bill Hewitt Employee Wellness Center — opened in the summer of 2024 and spans 6,700 square feet with modern cardio machines, weight machines, free weights, a studio for live classes, and includes showers and locker rooms for convenience.
Additionally, residents or fellows at our three campuses get discounted membership fees to area gyms. In Jacksonville, Florida, residents and fellows can obtain an exclusive discount with the YMCA (several locations).
Groups on campus
Opportunities to join a variety of groups on campus provide regular social activities and can help enhance your training while connecting with a broad group of peers.
Trainees will have the opportunity to join a Mayo Employee Resource Group (MERG) at any time during their training program. Current MERGs on the Florida campus include groups based on African, Asian, and Latino heritage as well as groups focused on veterans, global health volunteering, professional development, family resources and events, and LGBTI and differently-abled staff and allies.
Well-being
The Student Services office provides resources to promote academic, emotional, social, cognitive, financial, and physical well-being. Career and academic services include academic advising, peer tutoring, and accommodations for learners with disabilities or health conditions. Mental health services, counseling, interview practice, and a variety of enrichment sessions on topics like budgeting, resiliency, and stress and burn-out are also available through the Student Services office.

The Mayo Fellows Association (MFA) offers a peer and social support network for residents and fellows and their families with social events, athletics, and advocacy.
